Im just wondering now that my surgery date(March 3rd) is coming so fast. When they say cut food into small bites, what does small mean? Steak for instance, 1/4" squares? Im so used to being very hungry by the time i eat(most times i don eat until 1-2:00 pm) but i eat alot of food, pretty fast. The other day i was eating pizza, i think i only chewed a mouthful 3 times at one point! Can you drink big gulps of water(after a period of time)or do you have to just sip forever? If you chew your food to a (basically puree), why do you have to puree it during that stage of post op? Im not being funny, i intend to follow all guidelines, i was just wondering?

Cutting small means cutting to about the size of a pea or pencil eraser.

You're supposed to chewed each of those erasers 20 - 30 times before swallowing.

Have you had your pre-op consultation yet and signed the paperwork?

Thanks for the answer. No the dr. called me the other day to tell me their office would call me March 2nd(day before) to instruct me about when to show up. All testing is done, i did registration on internet. Im assuming theyll do anything else that needs done the day of. I hope they get me into OR as soon as possible, i will be a "basket case" that morning. Thanks again for the response

Cutting the food up small means you won't try to swallow to big a piece and get stuck. I personally can not gulp Water. It's like a funnel that overfills and the liqued will come right back up.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
