4 weeks post surgery..having problem tollerating bread

Recommended Posts

If you choose the right type of bread it is not empty calories.Wholegrains are good for you and they do help to keep you regular among other things. This in itself can be quite a problem for a lot of bandsters, particularly ones that focus on Protein and forget some of the other food groups.

Well, this is another area where doctor's differ on their advice. The nutritionist I worked w/at my surgeon's office for 6 months before banded recommended that I pretty much eliminate bread, Pasta, and rice from my diet (regardless if they are whole grain or not) because there is nothing in these that I really need... at least nothing that can't be gotten through a supplement. She would rather see me eat Protein first, then vegies/fruit, but think of bread, Pasta, rice as a once in awhile treat (a small serving up to 4 times per week is what they prefer as a limit).

I have been on so many diets before. Despite my weight, I've been 'on' a diet more than I've been 'off' a diet for most of my adult life. And almost all of them recommend cutting way back on starch (even good carbs) so I've pretty much gotten used to that already. I really don't mind as long as the hunger component is taken care of (like the band does).

OK... warning TMI coming.... skip to the next post if you don't want to hear about poop. As for the Constipation factor, I have always been on the loose side so WLS has actually just helped me to become 'normal' in that department. I'm actually lactose intolerant too so I have to remember to take a lactaid before eating any dairy or I am in the bathroom immediately after. So, I never worry about constipation. If I was to ever get constipated, I could drink a glass of milk or, better yet, a Protein shake, without my lactaid and that would clear me. LOL But, once again, my nutritionist's advice is that Fiber can be supplemented to.

For the record, I'm not saying my nutritionist is God and knows better from everyone else. I'm just saying that there are different opinions on this. Its not necessarily right to say that bread is empty calories, but its not necessarily right to say that it isn't. If you lined up 100 different nutritionists/dieticians, I bet half would say one thing and half would say another.

The nutritionist at my docs office said no bread, Pasta, rice or the like until I have lost 75% of the goal to lose. Well guess what, I am 25 lbs from that, and I don't really miss it. I have noticed they have the thin Bagels at the store now, only because i was shopping with my daughter for her dorm and she bought them, but I do not miss them.

When I make Spaghetti for Mike i have the sauce over Ricotta and Cottage cheese for myself. If we go to Olive Garden for dinner when visiting my daughter at college, I just order a side of meatball or Soup, and have a salad, instead of pasta.

When I was a couple months post op, I did have a week or so where i was eating grilled cheese, until I had my 3rd fill, and I ended up so ill, i thought I was going to die. This was my first stuck episode, and I do not want to relive that ever again. I swore off bread that day, and have not touched it since.

I can't do bread, Pasta, rice...only crispy things like crackers, maybe a taco shell...the bread has been a good thing because that's a huge weak spot for me. Not eating rice or Pasta is also a nonissue for me. Also can't do steak or dry chicken.. But I can eat popcorn...go figure.

i'm almost 8 months out now and after this last fill i can't do most starch....occasionally i can do sweet potatoes or a regular small potato...and bread only if it's DRY or really moist (like a small sub w/dressing)...

My doc said NO STARCH (especially bread) for the first 4-6 months post op, at least....

When I did lose weight on my own (10 years ago), all i did was no starch and the weight few off...you think you're missing more than you really are...and believe me, for an italian to say that you don't NEED bread and Pasta, it must really be ok..LOL

Once it's out of your system, you truly won't miss it...and when you do taste it again, you'll probably think "THAT'S what i've missed? It doesn't tase as good as i thought"....really...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
