Medical Alert Bracelets - and Bariatric Surgery Patients/RNY Patients

-----------

There are lots of strange stories surrounding whether or not you need to get a Medical alert Bracelet after you have had Bariatric Surgery or are an RNY patient. To be perfectly frank with you after all the trouble you have been through to get to where you are today I would suggest that you do.

It is unlikely that you would get your pouch popped by the medical professionals but they will take more precautions and act more carefully if they are aware of the situation. They will also be made aware that they cannot give you certain drugs or nutrients. If you are in an accident, are not conscious or coherent and you have no one with you the only way for the medics to find out the relevant information at the scene is by the information that you provide. In this case you could only provide the information via your Medical Alert Bracelet.

The information that the Medical Alert Bracelets must contain is as follows:

• YOUR NAME

• GASTRIC BAND

• NO BLIND NG TUBE/SCOPES

• NO NSAIDS

• NO SUGARS

• YOUR SURGEONS NAME AND CONTACT NUMBER

Rather than stating no sugars some people simply state diabetic of course this maybe the case. If you have any allergies you should also mention this. If you are an RNY patient then you should replace the term GASTRICT BAND with GASTRICT BYPASS.

Medical Alert Bracelets are not the embarrassment that they used to be, by wearing one you will not constantly have to answer questions about it. There is a large range of styles available to suit every taste, they look like regular jewellery but they all contain the insignia which lets the medical professional know that your bracelet is in fact a Medical Alert Bracelet, they are trained to spot these.

Medical Alert Bracelets are a great gift idea for you or a loved one that has just been through Bariatric/RNY Surgery, it will allay some of the fears surrounding what happens if you have to have an emergency medical intervention.

I'm not sure you could get all that info on a small tag. This pretty much just sounds like an advertisement. I have a couple of bracelets with a tag, but I don't wear them that often. From what I understand, trained medical professionals are more apt to look at your drivers license and any information directly behind it, which is where I carry a free medical ID card I printed out from online that shows all my current meds, lap band, physician's name, etc. Much more information and....FREE!

"I'm not sure you could get all that info on a small tag."

Funny you would say that - I was thinking the same thing !! LOL So..... what ..... The Bracelet goes from your wrist to your elbow?? :cursing:

Where did you find a med card online??

I got mine from: Free (ICE) In Case of Emergency Medical Alert Wallet Card. You just input the information and you can print it out and laminate it if you want. Or just leave it as is if your info changes frequently.

I was curious as to why you would put NO SUGARS on it or put diabetic when you are not. I almost find that more risky than not having one on at all.

NSAIDS one time will not hurt anyone unless they are allergic. In an emergency where you are "not conscious or coherent" what NSAID are they going to give you that would cause harm?

I have one and it just has Gastric Band, No Blind NG and a phone # for emergency contact - that easily fit on the 3 lines I was allotted.

I started wearing a Medic-Alert upon banding; I really should have been wearing one for years, because I have drug allergies medical personnel should be aware of. It took banding to give me the impetus to actually do it.

I got mine at laurenshope.com, and it's very pretty; I wear the medical tag on the inside of my wrist so that it's not conspicuous.

Medical personnel DO look for bands. They are reluctant to go into wallets right off the bat--but even if they weren't, it's just easier (and faster) for them to check your wrist or look for a dogtag necklace with medical information. In accident situations, people and their identification can be separated. (This has happened to me.) Having the information on one's body is a really good idea.

There's more space than you'd think. I have 5 lines of information. The first is my name, the second says, "Realize gastric band," the third and fourth list my drug allergies, and the fifth gives my ICE information.

I don't have anything about NG tubes. First responders aren't apt to insert NG tubes, and the fact that I've listed that I'm banded is enough information to guide ER personnel in that regard. My ICE person can provide that information, as well.

I am allergic to NSAIDs, so they are included already. If I weren't allergic, I would not be concerned about short-term administration of NSAIDs in an emergency. Unless I had plenty of tag space, I wouldn't worry about including this information.

Anyway-if you're thinking of getting a Bracelet, know that there are really nice choices that really CAN help you in an emergency.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.

Lost my Pup last month and struggled really hard for that first month. Stopped tracking intake and slid into old habits here and there. Also quit working out. Can't walk in the neighborhood because of all of the memories we shared. Losing my Pup is the most heartbreaking thing I've ever been through. My Pup was my world 💔
Talked to my doc during my one year followup and they were not worried about my current status. They know, and I know, that I will get back on track.

I'm so sorry. I lost my pup (Mr. Bitters - a chocolate Pomeranian) 2 years ago and it still makes me tear up. He was my everything - my constant companion. I understand. Do the best you can to get back on track.
