2 weeks post op and no restriction

Hey there everyone.. I'm two weeks post-op and i'm not having barely any restriction while eating, I even ate bread yesterday with no problem. Is this normal? I will have my first fill in about 2 weeks. Will that help? Also I've lost 18 lbs from the pre-op liquid diet till now.. is that good?

Any advice will help!!!!!!

I haven't gotten my first fill yet, but my guess is that once you get one, you'll start to feel restriction. from what i've read on this site though, it could take a couple fills. i am lucky i guess, because i have felt restriction since day one (i am only a week post op) but i have restriction when i'm eating. good luck

I'm almost 2 weeks post op too. I've lost 17 lbs since surgery and could probably tolerate anything but I get full really fast so I think I have some restriction (or residual swelling?) I've been very cautious with foods and have basically stuck to my dr's advice. .I've tried some things off the list and eaten too quickly and feel uncomfortable but didn't get sick.I'm gaining back a little but I think that's ok since I'm eating more.I have a post op appt tomorrow so I'll see how I'm really doing. I gained a little when I first started eating real food too, and I got really discouraged, but then I lost it again so i don't think you have to worry about that!!!

:wink2:So glad someone started this thread as I was thinking along the same lines. I was banded on 1/21. I followed the post-op diet strictly for about 9 days and then was so hungry and no energy that I started back on reg. food. Too soon, I know but I also haven't felt any restriction(the PA told me that there's between 2 and 3 ccs in my band right now and first fill will add 2-3 more)....a little bloated and too full sometimes but no sickness. I guess I know I'm kind of playing with fire but it was all I could do to gag down the shakes and yogurt for the 2 weeks pre-op and the week post-op. Anyway, I go for my first fill on 2/15 and am hoping that I get some restriction then. Anyone else not following the strict guidelines? I know I'll have the most success with the low cal/low fat "healthy" foods that I hate but I'd love to know if anyone is having success based only on the restriction/limited portions vs. following a strict low cal/low fat diet.

I think I totally screwed up. I ate pizza 6 days after my surgery. I felt a lil bloated but fine. SInce then I have ate with my family and everything. I feel no restiriction at all. I have had some sharp pain but nothing that sticks. I was a lil scared my band may have slipped. How will anyone know if it did? Im a lil nervous about my first fill cause I would be devistated if the band slipped or something. But I have lost 25 pounds between the pre opt diet and now. Hope it sticks.

I am six days post-op today and I still get full quick. So quick in fact that I don't think I am getting enough nutrition. I think I could handle some mushy stuff but my doc requires 3 weeks liq/shakes/yogurt. I feel weak and exhausted after unloading the stupid dishwasher. I have a lot of HEAD HUNGER. I can't wait for the mushy stage!

I know how you feel, don't worry, this is normal. I had no restriction in my band until my third fill. I now have 6.5cc's in my 10cc band and I have a ton of restriction and it's really starting to work. It took me about four months to get the fills in and get the results I wanted. I've lost 30 pounds and have 30 to go. Stick with it, it will get better!!

I'm a few days post op and was so hungry with the liquid post-op diet that my doctor moved me onto mushies. She also told me NOT to progress onto solid whole food until 6 weeks because the band hasn't settled until then and the chance for slippage is very high until then.

I'm two weeks post op today and officially moving into bandster hell! I'm hungry but sticking to the diet for the most part. I'm dying for chewable food! I want a salad!

All you can do is your best! If you fall off, get up and back on!

I know how you feel, i'm 1 week post op and today was my first full day of all liquids, I was so weak up to yesterday, i was on Clear Liquids, but thank goodness, i was told to start haveing yougrt, sf pudding, cream Soup and shakes, plus all the clear liquids. But i'm starting to want food, that i can chew, even things I usally don't eat look good....

i know that on the full liquid diet, i haven't been getting enough calories & even trying my hardest, i'm not getting enough Protein. i have been getting probably between 500 & 600 cals a day, and i'm supposed to be getting about 1100 to be losing the way i want to

Yes this is normal. It's not the band that gives you restriction, it's the fill.

You may not even have restriction after your first, second or third fills, depending on how much/little your doctor puts in.

I have 12cc band and had no restriction after my first fill of 3cc and a second fill of 3cc. In fact, even at 7.5cc I did not have restriction. Now, at 8.5cc I do.

You should be able to go in every 2 weeks for a fill until you get to restriction. How soon you get to restriction is up to you. Don't let it be up to an arbitrary schedule set by the doctor.

I was banded on 1/27/10. I go for my 1st fill on 2/15 as well and I have been eating regular food for the last few day with no problems. There is no restriction. I have gained about 5 lbs back of the 24 I originally lost. That is not making me happy. I am having a hard time sticking to the plan late at night when everyone is asleep. I have to start exercising too....dancing with the stars dance video is great fun. I just want have some restriction soon!:thumbup:

It's normal to not feel much restriction the first several weeks following surgery. I sure can identify with that feeling that you need to eat something. When that urge hit me so strong I couldn't stand it anymore, I cooked some Cream of Wheat that I had put two scoops of chocolate Protein powder in, so it tasted like Malto Meal. Yum! Just make it kind of soupy -- you don't want to risk slippage of your band. One time I tossed in a sliced banana and cooked it with the Cream of Wheat. After being on liquids, I never had anything so good! Or try a small jar of baby meat. You will probably need to salt it, but it will taste real good. You should not be eating bread this early in the game - that is very risky! You could microwave a little frozen strawberries or blueberries, mash them up real well and add some skim ricotta cheese or greek yogurt and some artificial sweetner. Eat it slowly with a baby spoon. Make it last at least 15 to 20 minutes. I also had no problem with scrambled egg when I was supposed to be on liquid.

You generally will lose a lot weight on the liquid diet because the lack of bad carbs may put your body into Ketosis. When I hit that stage, I was losing a pound a day. You can tell if you are in Ketosis because you will have a horrible taste in your mouth that you can't get rid of, and you may feel nauseated. Ketosis is how people lose so much weight who are on the Atkins and other low carb diets. It's okay to lose weight like that for a little while, but when I couldn't take it anymore, I ate a can of potato Soup to take myself out of ketosis.

Since I didn't feel any restriction the first weeks after surgery, my doctor gave me my first fill on my one-month followup. It helped a lot. Then he gave me my 2nd fill yesterday on my 6 week visit. I'm having a little trouble with too much restriction I think, because I'm having trouble even drinking Water. I have to eat and drink standing up, so I may have to go get the doc to take a little out of the band.

Hang in there. Time will pass quickly. It's important that you let yourself heal before adding too many solid foods. Try one thing at a time to see what you can tolerate. It's different for everyone.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
