Stuck pill or slip?

Recommended Posts

I have been on antibiotics for a staph infection for the past few days... every time I would go to take a pill, I would position it carefully and take a full glass of Water. The pills are pretty big, but the swelling and pain from the staph was horrible - I didn't think to ask my doc for liquid meds, and I'm regretting that now. The pills had been going down fine until last night...

Last night I took a pill and didn't really feel like it went down right. I drank some more water and laid down. The next time I got up, it still felt like it was stuck there in my chest. More water, then warm water, and I still had this feeling like something was stuck there, and at times it felt like heartburn. So I decided to sleep on it. The next morning (this morning) I felt fine. I didn't have Breakfast, but drank liquids with no problem. Then at lunch, I tried to eat, and I was able to feel that "stuck pill" feeling again, even with my usual small bites and lots of chewing.

Could it be that that pill is still lodged in my band somehow? It's a capsule, so I figured it would have dissolved by now, but... could it be stuck in the opening? Or... is this a slip? I can't eat solids or else I feel pain and some cramping as the food goes down. Liquids go down ok for the most part, but I get a slight cramp occasionally.

I tried calling my doc, but I work 12-hr shifts at a prison, so I either get a hold of him on my lunch break or not at all. Today, it was not at all. Any thoughts?

It's possible that the pill was stuck and now what you're dealing with is some temporary swelling. How are you this morning?

P.S. I'd call the doc and ask for a liquid med and not take any more chances.

I had the same thing happen last night with giant pills for the sinus infection I have. I think there is some swelling, so I am eating mushies today. THere is some discomfort and lots of gurgling noises as the food moves through the band (although that is nothing new). I went to the drugstore and got a liquid version of the medicine. I'd say do a day or two of soft food and see how it goes. Good luck. It is scary I know-

I've read that stuck pills can cause a sort of acid burn which causes a bit of discomfort for a few days. Maybe this is the case. If you had slipped you would not be able to keep liquid down.

Oh yeah on the stuck pill issue been there done that. Had a real problem sleeping due to major gastic backwash recently had to get band checked via barium xray...they said, have you taken med lately? Of course I said yes and they showed me that one of the pills I took was "stuck" at the opening and apparently it had happened every time I took that pill. Dang. Total unfill and have to start over again. My advise is to ask your pharmacist if the pill can be crushed and if so get a pill crusher, tastes horrible but better than the alternative of getting stuck. Even after a year I took mine (thinking no problem before) and took it as usual and ended up having to get totally unfilled to relieve the gastric and inflamation problem. No matter how long you have been banded it can sneak up on you. Good luck and hope it gets better for you.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
