questions about post op diet, same for everyone?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm hoping to hear what other docs issue as the post op diet. I think I have some pretty conservitive rules which i am fine with following. I'm wondering what other folks have to do?

I have to do some traveling one month out- and want to be prepared for that since I will be away from home (just on a relaxing vaca)- but all the same... It's also a challenge for me b/c I'm a vegetarian.

Here's thier diet plan

goal: 60 grams of Protein a day

10 day pre op full liquid diet

4 day clear liquid post surgery

10 days full liquid

14 days blenderized

I had to do a practice 3 day liquid diet already, it wasn't so bad. Lots of Protein Shakes and some blended Soups.

38 days... start to finish...I wonder how much I will loose in that time alone?

How much did you loose in the few recover weeks post op?

If you could recommend one solid food to introduce first, what would it be?

thank you!

scheduled for March 15th!

My doc only required a one day clear liquid diet preop and then 2-3 days on each phase (clear, liquid, puree, etc.) postop. I was back on solid foods by the end of the 2nd week.

Thank you for the info. You confirmed for me that I was in fact in an ultra conservitive program. Looking forward to hear what others say too. What was the first solid foods you ate?

My program was somewhere in between yours and Elfie's. I had to do 5 days liquid pre-op, 2 days Clear Liquids, 12 days liquid, 2 weeks puree, 2 weeks soft foods. However, my doctor did shorten the liquid a little when I went in for my post-op checkup so I was only on liquids for about 8-10 days.

I am now on soft foods. The first real food I ate without blending it was egg salad - I had been making pureed egg salad so I just made it a little chunkier the first time. I have also found white fish (like cod, flounder) and tuna salad to be easy to eat. I can also eat chicken and ground meat (cooked soft in a sauce) but I have to take my time. Turkey chili is a good soft food because the beans/meat are soft. Just make sure you really grind up the turkey.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
