Crushing Pills Post Op

Recommended Posts

I take a laundry list of medicine each day so it was hard for me to accept that I would have to now crush all of my pills and take them every day. I tried this for a week or so after surgery but I had so many pills to take and some of them were capsules that just contained too much powder. I tried mixing them with pudding/applesauce/yogurt etc but I could still taste the extremely bad taste of the pills.

Luckily a few of my meds are available in liquid form and I would suggest anyone to ask their pharmacy any of their meds are available in liquid form, I was surprised with which ones were available.

So the question is now I have been taking mostly the liquid meds but the few smaller pills I have simply been taking. They are pretty small and I think they are probably fine but anyone else do this? Are they not going to get fully absorbed or something?

I take my pills regularly and I'm on my third or fourth fill... I've actually lost count. My pills are small though, probably only about 4mm across. My surgeon told me that once you are properly restricted, anything you ingest has to fit through a hole roughly the size of a chick pea. Chick peas are a good 6-7mm across. You can buy a pill splitter at the pharmacy for like $3 to quarter your pills and swallow them fairly normally instead of crushing them, which will improve in the taste department. Quartered, you should be able to get them in just fine and I don't see why they wouldn't be absorbed normally. As for the powder pills... you might be SOL there if they are big capsules and there's no equivalent tablet or liquid. My best advice there would to be to mix the powder into something with a really strong flavour. How do you feel about blue cheese dressing?

Yeah, I am on my 2nd fill and swallowing pills just fine tho I split them in half. I chew up some cheez-its and the shove the pills in. I can't swallow pills by drinking Water - a phobia I've had since I was a kid.

I do agree - mashing pills up then putting in applesauce in so gross!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
