Did the film "Shallow Hal" offend anyone?

Recommended Posts

I just saw it recently on TV (for about the 3rd time) and I still laugh at it.

Except for the scene where they offer Rosemary

a piece of cake and she takes a THIRD of the cake.

Okay, yeah, fat people over eat, but come on.

Nobody does that!

Anyway, I was wondering what others thought of that film.

I've taken huge chunks of cake and I am sure many others here have also.

I was more offended by the stereotype that they were giving of men all being shallow than that of fat people being selfless.

I wasn't offended in the least bit...I actually found it to be VERY funny!

It is what it is...

I didn't see the movie because I was so offended by the trailer. The message of the movie is that normal people have to rise above the dispproval of the general populus to be with a person who is overweight and that they should be considered virtuous to have overlooked this obvious flaw.

If the scenario were changed from fat to some sort of ethnicity this movie would never have been made. Maybe seeing the whole movie makes a difference but from the trailer alone, I didn't want to go anywhere near allowing this movie to make money.

That pretty much sums up the movie. However, she wasn't overweight, she was morbidly obese and the movie was centered around a single man's acceptance and not the general populous.

There was a man with a tail and some disfigured people as well.

i thought it was a kinda jacked up idea for a movie when i first saw the trailer and figured it would probably be offensive to some. i chose to see it later anyway just to see and it was entertaining although i think some parts were going overboard with the whole "fat thing".

eh...it didn't REALLY offend me. I agree that the stereotypes were a little over the top. The overeating, the breaking the chair etc etc. The main thing that made me cringe was looking at her wondering if that is what I look like! lol I have no concept of what I truly look like!

Didn't really offend me but found it kind of silly. There have been many movies made over the years that sterotype all kinds of people. We need to be able to laugh it off and take it with a grain of salt!

You mean like this pool scene?

* Warning! If the movie offended you, this definitely will. Don't whine if you choose to watch.

I think what I didn't like about it was that it made the assumption that all ugly people (not necessarily FAT but ugly) are of wonderful character and that beautiful people are not. I guess that wasn't that point of the movie- I only saw it once so I might be mistaken. But that was the general assumption I got out of it. And to me- whether overweight, ugly, obese, thin OR beautiful if not necessarily offensive- but untrue. So I just thought it was a dumb movie and chalked it up to that!

There's stereoptypes for everyone, fat people included and in movies they are played up and exaggerated.

So no, it didnt offend me at all.

I've certainly eaten 1/3 of a cake at a time too - more in fact. But I'd do it slice by slice so people didnt notice!

I laughed out loud just now... Why? Because I can relate! Taking a whole 1/3 at once is way to obvious so you just keep going back for more... When I have my Grandsons, It's easy to "say" its for them...... as Gramma gets a big bite and baby gets a nibble... Bite... Nibble... Bite... Nibble... Bite... Nibble.... Before you know it, it's gone and darn if baby doesn't want more.... LOL...

No more though. Now its reversed. gramma takes the nibbles and babies get the bites. ANd the ratio is more like three or four bites for baby to each one of grammas nibbles... Hehe...

I originally didn't go see it because the trailers made it seem to be just another movie making money off of fat jokes. However, I watched it one afternoon when I had nothing else to do and was pleasantly surprised. This movie was less about fat people and more to do with the prejudices of others towards fat people.

I loved it.

I get a little miffed at the movie and even this forum tends to be all female and their views. Let the record show I have been a fat man for more that 40 plus years and I have been called every name in the book. The one I can not stand Is morbidly obese come on just use the F word say FAT. Instead of skating around the fact. But hey I have lost over 180+lbs .

By the way I thought the movie was a Hoot.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
