I was wanted to see what others thought about owning a scale.

I just got banded on 1/26/2010. When I was moving last year my scale was broken and I never went out and got a new one ( I was prego and really hated scales). When I did own a scale and I was dieting I would weight myself like 3 times a day or every time I went into the bathroom…. lol. Sometimes it could really be discouraging and sometimes a little motivating. Should I buy a new scale or just see my weight whenever I go to the doctors?

Banded 1/26/2010

I'm with you..I weigh myself everyday. I actually had my partner hide the scale so I wouldn't do it so often. that was when I was dieting before. This time, I'm losing so quick that it's ok for it to be there, for now.

I think I'd go crazy without a scale and having to wait to see how much I lost!

I was banded the same day as you and I'm down 15 pounds...I wouldn't know that without the scale!!

HAHAHA…. That’s too funny I use to make my partner hide the scale too. I have no idea how much weight I have lost. I go to the doctors on Friday so I'm sure I'll find out then .It is actually the first time I can ever remember looking forward to be weighed at the doctor's office.

I have a scale, and I seem to go through cycles where I weigh myself several times a day, and then forgetting for a few days. I think if you have a scale, it just gives you more insight into how the band/diet is working for you.

Best wishes to you all!

If I were you I would get a scale. However, stop weighing yourself everyday, or even more. Weight flucuates a bit. I weigh myself once a week, in the morning, after using the bathroom.

If only it was that easy for me. I have no self control.

I would get one, I had become a little obsessed weighing two or three times a day--my second week post-op I had stalled. I tried to get my hubby to hide it and he just smiled and said, "In one month alone, you have lost thirty pounds--stay off the scale and feel good about that." I said he is right, so I have not weighed in days. Once a week will be good enough!

OH. Maybe I should put it in the basement. That way I'm not always walking by it and wanting to look.

Owning a scale makes you accountable. However, many on this board don't own one. My opinion is that you should own one. Just be nicer to yourself and promise to only weigh in on a certain day.

I was banded the day before you and before that I never wanted to see a scale. I used to say - me and the scale are not on speaking terms. Cringed at the doctors when the made me get weighed, I usually said no unless they insisted. However, looking back that may have contributed to gaining weight because I never knew how much I weighed. I was really surprised when the doctor weighed me for consultation. I had the surgery two weeks later. I now weigh myself first thing in the morning. I think that may be too often at this point. I would have to agree with the previous post and say weigh once a week. But do get a scale.

It is soooo Tempting to hop on the scale everytime you walk by it... I have one like the Dr's office that I got a few years ago at a yardsale for 5 bucks (It sat at my Ex Husbands house until I had the Band SUrgery then I told him I wanted it back...)...

I'm now a whore to it.... I am on the thing like 10 times a day.... I keep it on the wieght I'm at each time and see how much it changes each time by how much I have to move the little slider... It always starts off about 3 pounds lower in the morning and by bedtime it's always up! I hate that.... But it helps to controll what I eat all day as I am terrified up the upward slide...

Whats nice is to see it at 2 or 3 ounces less all of a sudden one morning compared to the Morning before... My Dr told me to cease and desist immediately and to quit being so Obsessive... He wants me to only weigh in when I am at the office. NO WAY... It's like a train wreck. You know you shouldn't watch but you can't help yourself...

My scales are right in front of my bathroom door. I will weigh each morning if I have time, BUT I only count my weight on Monday mornings as my progress weight (which you see in the tickers below).

There will be times if I have to go #2 that my morbid and weird curiosity will have me stepping on the scale before or after, but I am not consumed or obsessed by my weight.

Just as the others have said, your weight throughout the day will fluctuate, based on what you've eaten or drank, whether you're retaining fluids, that time of the month, etc.

So I say go ahead and step on those scales, but only be concerned with what your "official" weight is once a week.

Def. get a scale. I wasn't going to get one but a friend gave me a digital scale & it def. helps. I am in the minority and check myself once a week. I am excited b/c this morning I was finally able to fit into a t-shirt that I like w/o the spare tire!

Does everyone weigh themselves in the morning? I weigh myself at night. If I can "lose" a pound or 2 from Water I will begin weighing myself in the morning.

My weight at night is higher than in the morning, due to Water retention, the foods I've eaten, etc. So while I do sometimes weigh myself at night, I don't give that weight any credence. Funnily enough, it seems most of my doctor appointments are late afternoon, so my weight there tends to be a few pounds higher than what it is at home.

My .02...nothing wrong with being a scale whore as long as you don't let it de-motivate you and get you down.

On Monday morning, I get up and go to the bathroom and then weigh myself in the same lightweight silk nightie everytime. I have a triple beam balance scale (like the doctors used to have before the digitals) and it weighs me within a half pound of what the doctor's scale says.

I may or may not get on it on other mornings, but I don't really 'count' the week long fluctuations as 'official' and so I disregard them. At 3 months postop, I rarely get on them now throughout the week which is so different from when I dieted in the past. I think because I am confident that when the band is working with me (which it has not been up to this point), the weight will come off. Until then I don't stress. I'm just pleased I'm actually losing anything.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
