Protein Shakes for non-banded

Recommended Posts

Hello all. Me again with another annoying question :)

I am not banded yet... still researching. I was wondering if I could also benefit from Protein shakes?? I am up to 33 lbs lost since 5/31/05 and am pretty siked with that! :) Will adding more Protein to my diet help? Or is that something that is more beneficial for someone after being banded?

Oh... and since I have your attention... what is a good protein supplement to start on? Thanks! :) :)

Starting with Protein Shakes is a great idea. My doctor told me that I should start incorporating Protein Drinks into my diet at least 2 weeks before my surgery in order to lose some weight and also to shrink my liver to prevent any problems during surgery. I replaced Breakfast and lunch with a Protein Drink, lost some weight and I'm still keeping the Protein drink in my diet. I recommend the Myoplex Carb-sense which you can get at any GNC store (it's a little thick so mix it with some skim milk and you may also want to add a sweet and low for taste) or Optifast (I'm not sure where to find it so try to look on line or ask your doctor. If you want another form of protein replacement I recommend the Slim Fast Carb Option breakfast or meal bars. They taste good (like a granola bar) and are 14 g of protein.

Adkins makes one, if you want to go low carb. FitRx.com has what seems like every supplement known to man - at a fairly reasonable price. I have been doing Protein Shakes for breakfast, just to be sure I have breakfast. Protein is good.

I think Protein Shakes can help anyone that is trying to lose weight! It is a great idea to start them before you are banded. I drink the EAS Advant Edge Protein drinks and I like the chocolate fudge ones the best. 100 calorie and 15 grams of protein and little carbs at all. like 2 grams I think. They are swetened with Splenda so they really don't taste bad to me at all. I also like their Protein Bars as well. the chocolate Peanut Butter one is the best. Good luck with your weight lose before and after getting banded. You will love your band!!

I found out that when I use the shakes it kicks my weight loss up plus I dont have to worry about my intake as much when im doing my shakes. I have problems eating in the am (too tight) so I will have a shake for breakfast. I get my shakes from enjoyhealth.com and vitalady.com. They sell samples if you dont want to invest in a jug just yet.

try allthewhey.com especially the whey isolate, it is low carb, no sugar and high Protein 25g a serving. I like the choco mint so far, I bought the sample packs so I'll be trying the others during the week. I am figuring out which ones I like, so when I do have my surgery in Jan I'll be prepared. I am going to buy some Isopure clear to try out for my post-op surgery, I hope it tastes alright.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
