My first "stuck" and sliming episode!!

Recommended Posts

OMG I heard about the getting stuck and read about the getting stuck. Heard the term sliming but my doctor never told me ANYTHING and I never read anything about it until it happened to me! I thought I was going to die. Almost went to the ER. I chewed my food thoroughly, or so I thought, but took my Vitamin, which I guess is rather large and then was stuck. I have never felt pain like that before. I punched my chest repeatedly, husband pounded my back like an oversized baby. Tried to drink but the Water would just come back up. Didn't know what to do for over 10 minutes. Finally gagged myself three times and got some relief and then saw it was "slime." Don't mean to gross anyone out but would rather prepare someone who doesn't know - LIKE I DIDN'T - so they don't freak and know what to do. I'll know IF it happens again what to do to get some relief. That was the most disgusting and horrifying. I quickly switched to chewable vitamins and am swearing off bread - even though it was wheat toast, which I was told I could have! It's just not worth the risk.

Where does that crap come from and does anyone have repeated episodes of this?!

Slime is saliva. It is amazing how much we produce just sitting around doing nothing. When something does get stuck, it backs up in your esophagus. Your body reabsorbs the H2O from the saliva, or at least some of it, and the remainder gets concentrated and become slime.

It happens to me if I don't chew enough or eat something my band doesn't like. I learn not to eat those foods then.

I have periods of when sliming happens more often than other times. I haven't found any rhyme or reason to it. I agree, it is rather uncomfortable and that is why I pay attention to what I ate just right before it and analyze if it was because I didn't chew or if maybe its something my band didn't like.

Just so you know, when a PB happens, it is a mixture of saliva and the food you just ate coming up. Its not like throwing up, since the food hasn't really started being digested yet, so none of that stomach acid taste comes with it usually. Its just pretty much icky.

All of these are the fun things you get to learn about as you go through this journey. Good luck, and here's to not sliming or PBing very often!

Ahhh! The slime effect. Well this is how we learn. I believe that everyone should experience it once in their banded life so that they know what it is and how to deal with it when it DOES happen. You are right it's horrible but you know what not to eat or do next time. And never take a drink after you get stuck because that just makes it more stuck. I can't eat toast or beef. And it happened to me about 3 times already. You really can't be afraid to eat. You have to try things and some of them unfortunately won't agree with you. It might happen again. But then you will know that you can't eat those foods again.

Not all episodes last for a long period of time. And you don't want to make yourself gag all of the time because your band might slip. Obviously this time you had to because your pill got stuck.

After you get stuck like that and you slime, it's sometimes best to do the liquid phase for the remainder of the day because you tend to get irritated.

Well, maybe next time I will make the wheat toast more crispy. LOL. I did switch right away to chewables and actually no more upset stomach as I used to get with the pill. Thanks for the tip about drinking, I did not know that would make it worse and not better. I'll be sure not to do that. I suppose now that I think about it the liquid probably worked like glue. I honestly did not want it to come back up but I could get no relief and it was getting worse! So far I have been able to tolerate most things and when I feel the "hint" of anything that might feel like stuck, I just stop altogether!!! This is such a whole new life long learning experience. For the next two days I did mushies and shakes and I could feel that I was "hurt" on the inside. I'm assuming swelling.

This is the reason I am almost afraid to get a 3rd fill. People who don't have the band yet or haven't had it tightened ask what it feels like to get stuck? I don't know but what I do know is the food I haven't chewed properly on a semi tightened band feels like someone with a long fingernail is slowly scraping their finger slowly down my esophogus - a good 20 seconds of hitting your chest before it dumps into the stomach. If PB'ing is even worse than this -- urgh, I can't even imagine.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
