Severe heartburn, need advice

Recommended Posts

I never had heartburn before my band and not after until the last 4-5 days. I was banded in late Aug. 2005. I had a very bad PB experience a week ago so it makes me think my heartburn must have something to do with the PB. I never knew heartburn hurts as much as it does. When I first got it I thought I was having a heart attack, scared the bejeevers out of me! At first it was just after eating dinner (soup the first time). Now it seems like everything I eat goes straight to heartburn. I have swallowed Malox, cimetidine, Rolaids, just about anything I could find in hopes of getting rid of this monster in my chest. I had a fill in early Oct. but it was only .6cc's so it couldn't be that my band is too tight. This is driving me crazy, not to mention how uncomfortable it is, so if anyone could shed any light on this for me, I would appreciate it.

Anytime there is SEVERE heartburn, I'd suggest you get it checked out by your doctor- TODAY. ASAP.

Bad news- you could have slipped your band with the pb.

Good news- it could just be you irritated the heck out of your stomach (I did this once) and a little Priolosec or Nexium and you'll be as good as new in no time.

Keep us posted and don't panic...you'll be ok.

You may have developed a small ulcer and it can be fixed easily with a prescribed antacid. I have taken one for years and will continue taking it even though my ulcer has healed. Maybe the stress of waiting for your surgery and all the paper work has just stressed you out (leading cause of ulcers) along with caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. I would back off any of those if you are using them in any way. Good Luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
