Where exactly does the slime come from?

Recommended Posts

Until my 3rd fill this past Wed, I had no idea what sliming was - and then it happened to me on Fri nite and tonite also. It was like vomiting mucous (sorry if that's tmi). Where exactly does the slime come from? Thinking back to my anatomy and physioloy classes many yrs ago, I can;t think of a scientific reason for so much to come up. Just curious!

You would be amazed at the amount of saliva we produce just sitting around doing nothing. If you get stuck, the saliva has nowhere to go. It backs up and has to come out. Slime is just saliva.

The trick is to eat slowly, chew very well and pay attention to the foods that cause you to slime, since they are the ones getting stuck.

I always assumed the slime was a reaction to food being stuck. It is thicker than normal saliva and I'm fairly certain it is supposed to carry off or up, whatever is causing the irritation to the oesophagus. It comes in large mucous type slimy lumps that would be quite at home in any spittoon!!

It really is just saliva. As the H2O gets reabsorbed into your body, the remainder of what makes up saliva gets concentrated and becomes very thick.

regardless, it can be quite alarming. It is a very funky substance.

Haha I call them Jellyfish! I too have just recently started "sliming". It is extremely gross and hard to explain to anyone. So I explain it as what looks like a baby jellyfish in the toilet. That stuff can cause alot of discomfort that's for sure!

I figured slime was saliva the other day when it happened to me for the first time... I had eaten a couple of my Grandsons potato chips and I could feel the chest pressure and the chips seemed to be sitting in my throat... I fought throwing up for several minutes as my mouth kept salivating I thought it would wash the chips down...

As I kept swallowing the saliva I could feel it sitting there on top of the chips and not going past or washing them down... Finally I gave in to it, grabbed a couple of napkins and just let it roll out of my throat... It wasn't really like a "retching" throw up... It just rolled up and out very easily... There was about a 1/2 cup of gooey gross slim and then it was over. The chest pain was gone as well as the guilt I felt for even eating a chip... lesson learned... No More potato Chips...

Since my second fill, 6 days ago, I am only able to eat runny refried Beans (about 1 Tbsp) or about 1/2 cup of cream Soups (Taken very slowly or I can feel it sitting in my throat), or a Protein shake (Taken very slowly or it sits in my throat) or about a full cup of broth... I have lost 2.5 pounds since then... The only problem with being on a liquid diet is that I feel hungry quicker. About 60 to 90 minutes after I finish some, I am ready for more... I don't want to be in a habit of needing nourishment every 90 minutes... That won't work for me in the long run...

You might be slightly overfilled if that is how you are eating six days after the fill. You should call the doctor's office and see what they say. Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
