georgie1259 0 Posted January 29, 2010 I cant remember if this came up in my support groups or not, and I cant find it in any of my literature. Is having wine good or bad? I dont mean excessive, just a glass once in awhile...
vlp1968 83 Posted January 29, 2010 Having a glass of wine once in a while is fine. From what I've gathered you will get typsy faster than you used to. The only concern about alchohol is the empty calories.
BetsyB 9 Posted January 29, 2010 Where are you, food-wise? A glass of wine now and then won't hurt you--provided you're meeting your body's other needs, too. But at just a few weeks out of the starting gate, it might not be the best option, in terms of using very finite space to give your body what it requires to recover from surgery. Every surgeon is different; mine does not recommend adding alcohol until 75% of excess weight is gone. (Notice that he specifies 75%--while many surgeons are fine if their patients only lose 50% of their excess weight altogether; this will tell you that my surgeon is more stringent than most.) He actually prefers that his patients reach goal before adding starches and alcohol.
kiz 1 Posted January 29, 2010 You'll get answers all across the spectrum, but my doctor is fine with an occasional glass of wine.
txprincess 47 Posted January 29, 2010 My nutritionist said it was fine every once in a while as long as it didn't exceed 4 oz and I had met my Protein requirement for the day. Don't waste calories on alcohol if you still need to get in all your required nutrients. And she said that if I ever stall in my weight loss, alcohol will be the first thing she cuts from my diet. BarbaraWM 0 Posted January 29, 2010 A regular glass (5 oz) of red wine is actually good for you. It is loaded with antioxidants and is an integral part of the Mediterranean style diet, which is proven to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. And, it's usually less than 100 calories. If you enjoy it and are relaxed by the occasional glass of wine, you'll get a lot of benefit from it. Your doctor may say for dietary reasons it's not a good idea but use your own best judgment. I found great info about wine here: Red Wine Calories - LoveToKnow Wine
illuminationlady 7 Posted January 29, 2010 I drink wine occasionally. Not a problem.
gwins 0 Posted January 29, 2010 Just be careful as to how it affects you (i.e. getting tipsy quicker). I had to go to a party when I was just 2 weeks post-op. I mostly held a glass of wine -- only took a few sips and I could feel it immediately! Remember, you are taking in much fewer calories than before so alcohol will have a much quicker effect than you are used to.
