I had surgery 9/8/09. I really didn't drink after, I had a few drinks on new years but that was it. I had my first fill a week ago, and last night I went out with friends for a birthday. I had one long island ice tea....I was gone! Now I cant stop throwing up, nothing is staying down today, I feel so sick. I know its prob the hangover that's making me feel so icky and throw up, but I am starting to worry.....could I have done anything to my band? My stomach is starting to get soar from all this throwing up :smile2:

If you have been throwing up (hangover or maybe stomach bug), you are irritating your stomach and it may take a couple of days to get back to normal. After I throw up, I will drink hot tea which seems to help the inflammation and I go on the clear (broth) liquid diet for a couple of days and then I feel better. Good luck........

I doubt it was the Long Island Ice Tea.

I have heard that with the band alcohol hits you faster but I haven't had that happen to me.

I don't drink much, my drink of choice is one of those flavored malt beverages and I average one or two a week but they hit me the same as previous, not falling down drunk like people have said.

It sounds like you have a stomach bug.

I would stick to Clear Liquids, for a few days, then go to shakes then soft.

But as an ex nurse I can tell you that you shouldn't drink anything for at least 4 hours after vomiting then sips, no more than 1 cc every 15 minutes. Kind of like what they had me do in the hospital after surgery, 1 cc every 15 min. Why did they bring me that tray with a cup of broth, a 30 oz bottle of Isopure and sherbert? I got the broth down in about 2 hours and they took the tray away.

This happened to my daughter about 6 months ago. She started drinking beer of all things, and drank it all day and into the night. She started throwing up and couldn't stop. She ended up getting an unfil and then still had to go to the hospital for intravenous anti nausea meds. She learned a valuable lesson. I doubt if this is what is going on with you because you only had one drink. Probably ate something also that was spoiled or not completely good. It will pass. Soon I hope......

My doctor told me if I ever throw up for any reason call him and he will get me nausea meds to stop it asap.

I'd give the doc a call--antinausea meds might be in order. Vomiting can cause slippage if unchecked.

To all of the naysayers, y'all DO know that a Long Island ice tea is the equivalent of an average of six drinks, right? (It's 4-8 shots of various clear liquors with a splash each of sweet & sour and Coke.) Of course that will hit someone with a small stomach capacity (and therefore no room for FOOD) differently than preop!

I don't get the, "Eh, I drink, so you must be okay" mentality so prevalent here. Sure, having a drink now and then once your band is well-established is fine. But saying, "it can't be the drink, because I drink Smirnoff Ice two times a week" is self-serving.

OP, this is directed at the responders, not you; you already know this. Please call your doctor for advice about how to handle the fallout to preserve the patency of your band. I hope you feel better fast!

Well....hopefully you learned a lesson! LOL I think you'll be fine. Doubt the drink had an affect on the band. However people are probably right that you should call your dr. if the vomiting continues much longer. Feel better and best of luck!

My doctor says NO ALCOHOL for a year! Call your doctor for some meds.

There are also over-the-counter anti-nausea meds that you can get at walgreens, cvs, etc. if you are in a pinch. I'm not sure of the difference between those and the dr. prescribed stuff, but the drugstore brand worked for me awhile back when I was sick/throwing up.

Take care and feel better!

I would definitely call your doctor and I've heard there is a nasty stomach bug going around. I agree that hot peppermint tea makes you feel much better - I keep it on hand for when I get stuck too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
