Newbie - help please!

Recommended Posts

Hi - I had surgery 12 days ago and had a really bad problem with trapped wind (something I thought I'd never discuss with strangers!).

This appears to be better but I am left with an issue, everytime I inhale I get a stitch like pain in my left side? It's almost under my last rib. Any ideas what this could be? I've put it down to this being the location of the band and maybe swelling?! Has anyone else experienced this? Any help would be gratefully appreciated guys.

Thanks Lu x

Sorry to hear you're in pain Lu. I really think this is gas pain. Honestly, some are just lucky enough to experience it more than others. You may get tired of hearing this, but walking is the only thing that helped me (perhaps others may have additional suggestions, but that was my saving grace). Try to walk around as much as you can!

Hope you feel better soon! Keep us posted and congrats on your band!

Thanks Julians Mom2003,

I finally received a call from the hospital this afternoon so asked them, they agree with you that it is still gas pain

Happily, I am on the mend everyday I see further improvement.

Thanks again,

Lu x

You just need to go into Edit Signature and you can copy the code from tickerfactory.com and place it in the signature box.

Try using GasX strips. They worked great for me. I would use 2-3 at a time and my gas went away quickly. I also walked every day for 30 min at a time.

I had the same pain in my side and was told that it was gas. I'm just now getting over all of the gas pain and it's been almost 2 weeks since my surgery. I tried the Gas X strips but they didn't work for me. Walking should help and I was also told from a friend that's had the band for over a year to lay on your stomach. I tried it and it helped! Also, the nurse from my surgeon's office said some people say that rocking in a rocking chair helps. Not sure about that since I don't have a rocking chair but if you do, it might be worth a try! Good luck!

Thanks Megill - I actually do have a nursing chair that rocks so I'll give it a go also I can't sleep at the mo as I normally sleep on my stomach and have been too scared to try - maybe now I can, can you imagine if that sorts out both problems!!

Thanks huni xx

I had the same pain, it felt like a side ache, like you get when you run. I looked it up online and one of the causes was dehydration... I drank as much Water as possible and it helped quite a bit. So if it isn't gas it may be dehydration.

Hi MelissaO,

You could be right, I have a real problem with remembering to drink regularly and by the time I do get the urge I'm seriously thirsty, so I'll try drinking more too.

Thanks huni xx

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
