Greek Yogurt - Pricey and is it worth it?

Recommended Posts

I love the Chobani also. But I will say, if you don't like yogurt to begin with, Greek yogurt isn't going to change your opinion probably. But for those who do, I like it because it's a little thicker, GREAT for Protein and you get more in a container than the other types of yogurt. If you watch for sales...BJ's will have a 16-container box of it every once in a while. I usually can find it on sale for a dollar each.

Ok, so I tried it. The verdict? It was OK. I mixed it with some honey to sweeten it, as well as some black berries. The berries were way too tart, so that didn't help. Once I ate those, I then added the peaches and bananas I had, and that was better.

I did taste it first before adding anything and it does taste like sour cream, which may come in useful for recipes in the future.

I may have to try it in different flavor combinations. I may just stick to my CARBMaster yogurt, 12 g Protein, 80 calories, and 4 grams carbs for $0.50. The Fage 0% fat yogurt had only 15 g of Protein, so not sure that it's worth the extra $1.50.

I am in Florida and I buy the Chobani greek yogurt.. my local grocery store usually has it on sale 3 for $4... BUT... if you have a BJ's Wholesale club near you.. I get a 12 pack for like $12... that's the Florida price, not sure if the price is consistant throughout all their locations.. but worth checking out!

I bought some greek yogurt this weekend to try. Holy cow it's expensive! $1.99 for a serving. Now this was at my local Kroger's grocery store. Is it less expensive at say a Vitamin Cottage? We don't have Trader Joe's here where I live (maybe in next city over but I refuse to drive to another town to do my grocery shopping).

I'm hoping it's tasty as it is my lunch today, along with some black berries and baked tostito chips and fresh salsa. I know, weird combination, but that's what I packed last night! lol

So where do you buy your greek yogurt and how much do you pay?

I ordered a greek yogurt at Starbucks a few weeks ago because I read so much about it here. It sounded yummy, came with coconut-almond macaroon granola., pumpkin seeds and dried cranberries. It sounded amazing, but when I got it I was very shocked to find out that it tasted exactly like SOUR CREAM. WTH? Is it supposed to taste like that? I couldn't eat it.

I haven't seen that at Starbucks, Suzanne. Sounds good, but I always have to add a packet of Stevia to cut the tartness, or it does taste a lot like sour cream. One packet does the trick for me. I also usually add a spoonful of sugar free preserves which would cut the tartness factor down considerably. I might throw in blueberries, All Bran (Bran Buds work best), and vanilla flavored Protein powder if I need a little extra Protein that day. Come down to Richmond sometime, and I'll make you a special..lol

For that price and that amount of Protein it really wouldn't be worth it compared to the carbmaster...however; if you buy the stuff at Trader Joes...it is WAY worth it!!! I am talking about the 'plain' (16oz.) container of it. If you compare the calories, fat and Protein in alot of the greek yogurts it is much better for you....The 0% and 2% fat of their brand has between 21-24 grams of protein in 1 cup of it and it is unflavored. So I use it in recipies like stroganoff, tacos and it makes a great dip when you mix in dry ranch seasoning and dried dill. Dip some carrots and red peppers in it and it is like having a piece of meat with your veggies. But when I eat it ad a yogurt I stir in 2 pkts of splenda, drizzle of honey and some fresh or frozen fruit. In Sac, Ca. it costs approx. 2.69 for 2 cups worth. Each cup has more protein than the average chicken breast, so when you look at it like that it is worth it. And it is something you can eat almost right after a fill too.

You are all such clever people. I've only been banded for 6 days but have been on the weight loss journey for 30 years and what I am finally learning is that while budget constraints are always something we have to work with, the cost of our food is something that should reflect our commitment and our dedication to getting healthy. Of course, donuts are cheaper than organic produce (thanks to various government subsidies) and right now, I can't say that the produce actually mentally tastes better to me, but I know that I'm making a much better investment. It's kind of the difference between playing scratch offs and winning a $5 prize and investing in your 401K for the long haul! If anybody watched Oprah today, I usually don't but you know how fate is, she had some good thoughts and guests who were speaking about knowing more about where our food comes from and understanding each piece of food that we put in our mouths. Can I say I will never eat another candy bar? NO! But I am dedicated to finding other foods that will actually give me something back (besides calories and fat) in return. That said, thanks for letting me rant and I'm glad to see that so many of you are willing to offer such great and valuable advice to total strangers! What a great forum!

I buy the Oikos at Kroger or Walmart. I usually buy the vanilla flavor in hopes that it may be a little less tart. No I don't like it as much as CarbMaster and it has the flavor and consistency of sour cream(something I actually don't like) but I put a teaspoon of applebutter or some kind of sugar free jam or a sweetner packet and it cuts the tartness. Sometimes I mix it in my oatmeal. I eat it because its super healthy and it holds with me longer. I can take it or leave it but as I eat more of it and figure new ways out to decorate it, it grows on you.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
