Is the Pre-op Diet normal??

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone...I have surgery this friday and my preop diet starts on wednesday. I know i shouldn't complain because it is just for 2 days, but I called today and they said no Protein shakes...i am only allowed Clear Liquids like broth, clear Jello - didn't even know they made that, clear popcycles (lemon lime), nothing colored...I'm honestly wondering how I won't get weak...If i to too long without eating i experience low blood sugar and get the cold sweat and shakes. Somebody tell me I can handle it!

That's a new one on me...Most of us go on "clear" liquids but that just means liquids you can see through, for a day or two pre-op but i have never heard of anyone not allowed to have anything with any color at all...did they happen to say why? Even with the colored clear liquids my doc has you do sugar free so Sf Jello, SF popsicles, crystal light (sugar free of course) and broth that has no sugar or carbs at all...Yup, it was a miserable headachy 24 hours.... Sorry, I have no advice for you, I'm baffled on this one, BUT!!! Good luck, you can do it for 2 days...just keep your goal in mind and the time will fly by!

I wish I had a answer for you I have to do a two week pre-op diet but its not nearly as strict as yours. All docs are different I guess. I suggest that if you are not sure you should call and talk to someone, either your doc or a nurse in his/her office. I wouldn't leave questions unanswered especially if you're concerned. Best of Luck!

I am actually a hypoglycemic. My blood sugars drop low if I am not careful. My preop was almost the same as yours and I did just fine. My doc required me on low carbs for 2 months and then clear liquids for 2 days. I think going low carb kinda helped to balance my blood sugars. I didn't have all the cravings and things because I had been low carb so long. I was allowed colored Jello though as long as it was see through.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
