Why can't bandsters have caffeine? Does it harm the pouch in any way?

Hi...

My dietician advised me not to have it because of possible erosion problems going forward ...I've heard from other bandsters that they were warned that the caffine could cause hunger only :)...so, I have a teeny cup of "cafe olae" (sp?), a week, (1/2 cup coffee, 1/2 cup milk) and that works for me...I suppose 2 of them a week couldn't hurt either. Because I worry about the erosion thing, I hadn't had coffee for 1 mo pre and 3 months post band  but have to admit...I like my caffine and am glad to just have a lil'bit.

Hope that helps,

f&s :)

My NUT told me no caffine because caffine is a natural diarectic and you will dehydrate. Having the band is all about keeping hydrated. To replace the Fluid in your body from one cup of coffee you would have to drink 2 glasses of Water. Also coffee has something in it that is supposed to make you hungry. Even Decaf coffee has a certain amount of caffine in it.

I still have caffeine but not much. It's hard to find Decaf diet iced tea. But I usually only have one cup of caff coffee or tea a day. Otherwise, it's decaf, but that's way way down from pre-band. So I don't worry about it too much.

The amount of caffeine in a tea really isn't significant, so I wouldn't worry about hunting down caffeine free diet iced tea. We are generally told to avoid caffeine, but moderate consumption shouldn't really be a problem. One cup of coffee a day probably won't make that much of difference one way or another. You may also be told to steer away from coffee in general, but that's not necessarily due to the caffeine. There are oils in coffee that are extremely irritating to the stomach lining and those are NOT removed when making Decaf coffee. If you have a touchy tummy, decaf will be just as bad as regular.

I was only told to give it up for one month after surgery. The reason given is because caffeine is acidic and you want to avoid anything acidic on the stitches (where your stomach is sewn around the band) while you are still healing. I think advice on this varies a lot, though, cause I've heard of some people drinking coffee immediately after surgery and others who have been told to give up caffeine forever.

I have been going off diet coke, and the headaches are horrible. I decided to just try to give up caffeine b/c they are really bad for 2 weeks now. I wake up with one and tylenol doesn't help.
