nervous about starting to exercise - help please

Recommended Posts

I think this has been posted before, but I couldn't seem to dig up the thread. I'm about 3 1/2 weeks post-op and my doctor says I can exercise, but I'm nervous. I had the last of my stitches removed 4 days ago and he put a staple in my belly button which he plans on removing next Friday.

I just fear that by using some of my workout vids (Biggest Loser, Jillian, ect) that I'll bust/tear something. I think about the stitches/staples and the port on my muscle and everything in between going wrong. I know I should stay away from heavy weight lifting (not a prob since the heaviest weights I have are about 6 pounds) and ab exercises, but what about these vids. Is anyone else out there almost 4 weeks post-op (or has been) and working up a sweat. I guess I need a little reassurance that it's okay to get my butt moving.

Btw, my Biggest Loser vids go on and on about how "We're working the core", but isn't that my abdominal muscles too (where the port is)?

In the beginning walking is the best. Walk outside when pretty and at the mall when bad weather. I am 6 month post op and work out pretty hard but started out with alot of walking. You can get the video “Walk away the Pounds” and walk in your home. I have that tape, I like it! Good luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
