Help! Surgery 1/14- is this normal

Recommended Posts

Just had surgery. I have been feeling nausea every day- barely sipping food. When I do drink- mayby 1/2 hour later I wretch. I really didnt have gas pain but I do feel a 'restriction" in my chest( between the boobs) if I take a deep breath. I feel so miserable that i want to have the band removed right away. I cant lay down because I get short breath from that 'restriction' so I have been dozing sitting up. Any comments would help.

Hi I never had problems with Nausea but I've read others have. As for the gas pains in your chest I experienced that four days later and it was very very painful and I thought the same thing you did. Don't worry it will pass it may take two to three days but it will pass.

Have you contacted your doctor about the vomiting? For me, that is one of my main fears, that i get a stomach bug or something and it causes band slippage. I was banded on 1/14 as well, and I currently have "the elephant on my chest". Just a constant pressure that seems to get worse when i initially stand up or take a really deep breath. I just chalked it up to the last little bit of gas in my belly from the surgery. Yesterday was the first day since the surgery that I actually felt hunger, so I am guessing that the swelling around that band is going down. I know in my case, I am getting better every day. Just hang in there and remember why we chose the band.... I hope your things get better for you soon!

You really don't want to be vomiting at this stage so I would get to the doc ASAP. Atleast give him a call. So sorry you are dealing with this.

Everything except the vomiting sounds normal in my opinon. I would also suggest you check with the doctor. Since they do not place any Fluid in the band after the surgery, I think you should just be feeling gas discomfort, and some pain as the band settles.

Call the doctor let them know whats going on. Also walk walk walk...it helps with the chest and shoulder pain. Also are you using your breathing thing they sent home with you? Thats very important to keep your lungs strong. Hope you feel better soon..Dont worry it goes away.

KayKat, I did not experience anything like this, but could it be that you are having a reaction to the anesthesia? Have you ever had problems with it before? If not, I would be in direct contact with my doctor's office, because I don't think this is normal. Sorry you are feeling bad.

I had alot of nausea too and my doc reminded me i could have skim milk, it seem to coat the stomach and ease the nausea. I am 14 days out and I feel better than before the surgery but the second and third day I though I wasnt going to make it. I couldnt get comfortable anywhere. Walking , gas X and the heating pad saved me. It will get better. I'm not a good paitent, I am very whiney so if I can do it anyone can.

Hi,

I was banded on the 13th and have had everything you describe, I have experienced, except the retching. My nausea was so severe I called the surgeon's office and he called me in an anti-nausea medicine which took it away. It is still hard to drink all the Fluid and Protein each day, a couple of days I miss the mark by a little. The discomfort you feel in your chest when you breath is due to the surgery itself, not the band. It's painful, but deep breathing helps. Hopefully it will be easier for us to drink soon.

Thank you all sooo very much for your responses!. I feel better just knowing you are out there. I am trying to keep active so as not to think about the chest pain, although I do make weird faces when the 'attack' comes on. I will try an walk tonight and if still nauseous tomorrow I will call dr.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
