Lapband vs. Bypass?

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I had my consultation with my Surgeon, he will do both procedures. I told him I wanted the Lapband and he said I would be a good candidate for either procedure. Although the Lapband would be harder to get approved by my insurance but he would put up a good fight if that's my choice.

I keep hearing that the weight loss success rate is very low with the Lapband. Some told me that they chose the Bypass because their doctor told them they would only lose maybe half of the weight they needed to lose with a Lapband. When I was in the waiting room a patient told me he only lost 40 pounds and wasn't doing that great with the Lapband but he also said it was his own fault. This makes me a little nervous because I have 150 to lose and don't want to be disappointed that I made the wrong choice.

I just found this site so haven't had much time to browse but have read alot about the Lapband. Any regrets, advise would be appreciated.

I have had my band since 9/23/05, I have lost 20 pounds with my band already. If you follow the bandster rules you will lose weight. There several studies out on the web where the band and the bypass or compared. Eventually a banded person will lose the same amount of weight it will just take longer. You can defeat the band, you can defeat the bypass. There are some bypass patients that are now banded over their bypass because they had started gaining their weight back. It is all in how you want to approach the band, embrace it and do the best you can to follow the rules or struggle with it...same with bypass.

Thanks for your reply. You are absolutely right. I did read that Bypass patients lose weight really fast but have a regain period and they can potential regain all the weight. I understand that the Fills you have with a Lapband will keep you on track for years to come.

This is a great site, I will visit more often.

First, it it no longer band vs. bypass. There is another surgery, the DS.

http://www.duodenalswitch.com/

Cornell just published a study showing that the DS worked better than the RnY. And, if all your surgeon does is those two surgeries, it's best to find another surgeon to get a consult on that third option. I VERY lucky in that I'm getting a second chance at this...but I relate to having only one chance.

Then, there is no guarantee that you can keep getting adjustments with the band. I think that about 20% of us can't even tolerate ANY saline in the band without causing problems. That, of course means that 80% of the banded patients can tolerate adjustments...but that's four out of five.

Finally, while there ARE people who lose tremendous amounts of weight with the band (and we all want to be in that group), when you look at the large numbers, people with higher BMI's just don't do well enough for BC of Calif to keep paying for it. The study they use is one that shows that the percentage of weight lost--about 50-60%--is not enough to move heavier people out of Morbid Obesity. According to the charts, I needed to lose about the same amount of weight as you. If I had lost 50-60% of my excess weight and kept it off, I'd have been within a couple of pounds of STILL being MO.

Good luck on choosing, but consider ALL the options, and listen to those who have done well and those who have done so-so and those who are having it all yanked out. Good luck on your choosing.

Sue

I agree that it's what's best for each individual. If you were trying to say that you can only gain weight back with the lap band then I will disagree with you on that one. My sister's friend had gastric and went back to her habits and gained most of her weight back. Here's an article on Carnie Wilson and her challenges OK! Magazine - First for Celebrity News - Carnie Wilson's Weight Struggle

If you know that you can gain weight back with either one then I apologize for the above.

I have found a very new product that is a lapband alternative. This is not a sales solicitation. It really did work for me, and is a bulking agent, first of its kind. It was used by heather Hansen of the TV show's Biggest Looser. Email me at formdiet@gmail.com, otherwise good uck in your weight lost journey.

Jasongrove, you have posted a total of 7 times so far on this site and every time you have posted, you have advertised this product in your post and said it is "not a sales solicitation." ???

You are clearly advertising your product and trying to make sales by giving out your e-mail address so you can peddle your product. You should think about paying for advertising space like the rest of the vendors do.

No bandster in their right mind would use a bulking agent and stretch their pouch. Get a clue and peddle your glorified Metamucil somewhere else.

Exactly and that's what I meant by not only people who choose lap band gain weight back. That was the point not why they gained it back. You implied that the only people who will gain their weight back are people with lap bands and you're misinformed. My sister's friend and Carnie who both had gastric gained weight back. They will only lose the weight they gained back if they get back control and Carnie has. She has lost 40lbs of her gained weight and looks great and should be applauded. Now my sister's friend well that's too long of a story for here.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
