What the heck is a kcal?

Recommended Posts

So when ever I look at the nutritional info on a box in Korea everything is in k calories. What are k calories and whats the difference between them and regular cal?

I swear my treadmill in Canada would measure how many calories I burn in calories and k calories ( for every 1 k cal it was 3 calories) so does the same apply for food?

If so then wow food in Korea is fattening!

If not then why is there a difference between kcal and calories is your working out but not in food?

I still haven't figured that one yet, so hopefully someone else has more input. When I moved here I actually thought it might stand for Korean Calorie, which had me even more perplexed :)

Can you read Korean food labels? I can't, so I use this page Website - Korean food nutritional information

I always try to remember that "fat" (지방 ) is the hangul that looks like it starts with an upside down Y - lol

Personally, I think Korean processed food (snacks) are loaded with fat - much more than back home, but that's because there isn't that large of an obese population here. In the states there is diet food and low cal this or low fat that everywhere! Korean people seem to eat the Snacks in moderation, so they can afford to have a fattening treat every now and then. More power to 'em, but I miss the variety from back home. In fact, I think I'd kill for a Lean Cuisine pizza right now

what we normally refer to as a "calorie" is technically a Kilocalorie or Kcal. Stretching way back to my Chem 101 days, 1 Kcal = 1000 calories (little "c") So, if we say we burned 65 Calories in the normal vernacular, we really mean we burned 65 Kcal or 65,000 calories (little c). Incidentally, 1 pound = 3500 Kcal or 3,500,000 calories.

Hope this helps :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
