Yet another question on restriction (sorry, guys!)

Recommended Posts

Okay so I'm back on solids today. For Breakfast, I had a 4 oz yogurt, a cheese stick and a small banana (about 9 ounces total for the whole breakfast). I never got any pains (and I could've eaten more), but I stopped myself, waited the hour, drank about 32 ounces of Water, and it was all I could do to stretch out until 2:30 (4 hours from my breakfast) to eat lunch. For lunch, I had about 5 pieces of reduced fat turkey with a slice of FF cheese and Tomato slice on an arnold wheat thin and I don't feel hungry, but I don't feel full either.

So my question is....

Is restriction how full you feel and how long you can last until you need to eat again OR is it the feeling you get when you haven't chewed enough or have eaten too fast (aka getting stuck)? I can definitely feel it if I don't chew well enough, but wondering if I am confusing what restriction really is....

Then I think, if I'm asking what restriction is, chances are maybe I don't have it LOL.

I'm just not sure when to call the doc to ask for fill #2.....

Thoughts all knowing Lap Band Buddies ???? :(

Wow, congrats on your weight loss so far. Hun, research indicates that only a handful of people get restriction with the 1st fill. I was banded a day before you did, have had 2 fills and still haven`t got restriction and have definitely not lost as much weight as you have. I think you`re due for another fill now since it does not sound that you are restricted.

Restriction is when you eat about a cup of food and feel full for at least 4 hours afterward.

I didn't get even temporary restriction from swelling on my first two fills. On my 3rd, I had restriction for about a week and a half. I just had another .5 cc put in last Thursday (for a total of 7.5) and I have restriction again, only better than last time because now I can't drink Water with my meals even if I wanted to.

I'd schedule your next fill for 2 weeks from the last one. That'll give you time to make sure any swelling is gone from the last one.

Hi Juliansmom,

For me it was one of those I knew it when I had it moments.

Sort of like my first slime episode was a "what the heck is all this goo? OOOOHHHHH" moments.

I didn't get restriction until fill #2.

For me it is: Feeling satisfied on a small portion, but not getting stuck, provided I have chewed well. A meal will last me 3-4 hours. I don't obsess over my next meal. food doesn't rule all my thoughts. Yes, I still have head hunger, but with physical hunger under control, I can better fight it.

When I was overfilled, every meal was torture. Even yogurt was painful. I got stuck on string cheese and mashed potatoes.

As a side note, one of the first foods I got stuck on was a banana. I didn't eat one agin for a year. Then I was fine with them. After my last fill, they bother me again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
