questions for post surgery

Recommended Posts

1. I've watched a few videologs on Youtube and have heard several different people talk about shoulder pain after surgery. What is this caused from?

2. Some people say they can't sleep in their same position in bed after the surgery. Why

3. If you are from Massachusetts please let me know. I'd like to talk with someone who is local.

4. Is it very painful after surgery? I'm a baby about pain.

5. I am hoping to get it done over April vacation. Is it reasonable to feel better in one weeks time?

Thanks for answering my questions :w00t:

I can't answer all fo your questions, but I do know the answer to some.

1. Shoulder pain is caused from the trapped air left in your body when they do the surgery--they have to "blow you up" a bit to get to everything!

2. Tummy sleepers cannot get comfy in that position after surgery

5. I hope so I only have a week off from work!

1. The pain in your shoulders and upper body is from the air/gas they used during surgery. My doctor told me to get up and walk as much as i could because it will help the gas come out of the body. They just said that walking will help heal in general. Patsal hit it right on the nose.:w00t:

2. When i first had the surgery the only position i could sleep in was on my back but as i started healing i was able to start tolerated other positions. First back then sides. Now i am a month post-op and i am starting to be able to sleep on my stomach not fully all the way on my stomach but close. You had surgery and lil incisions on your stomach what do you expect lol Everyone is different and heals differently though so just go with what feels ok.

3. Sorry I'm not from Mass.:drool::sad:

4. The first few days after surgery where a lil painful but my doc had me on good meds. I think the most painful part is getting in and out of bed and on and off the couch. Things in general like that. To me it was the incision area that were the painful part especially the bigger incision. Just sore more than pain.

5. As far as when you go back to work depends on the kind of job you have. I work in a warehouse and do a lot of heavy lifting so i have to take the whole 6 weeks off works. (My employer requires it). If i had an office job or something more simple on the body like that i would have gone back to work a week later. Like i said everyone is different and all heal differently.

Hopefully this helps to some degree lol

Thanks for answering my questions :w00t:

1. If your surgery is done laproscopically, they use gas to inflate your belly so they can see better with the cameras. They try to get the gas out, but they can't get all of it. After surgery, it travels upwards and normally gets stuck in your shoulders. A heating pad and gas-x strips help alleviate the discomfort.

2. All the incisions are made in your belly. For me, it was uncomfortable to lay in any position except on my back. The first night I tried to lay on my side, and it ended up causing one of my incisions to bleed a little. I learned my lesson after that!

3. Not from Massacusetts..sorry

4. The pain is not bad after surgery. I felt as though having my first child was more painful (even with an epidural - when that wears off-- oh boy) and also when I threw out my back that was more painful then this surgery. The doctor prescribed some tylenol with codeine but I haven't had to take it. But everyone is different when it comes to how they react to surgery.

5. I will be one week post-op tomorrow and if I worked outside the home I would feel comfortable returning to a desk job tomorrow. If your job is a lot more strenuous (lots of movement, bending, lifting) you may have to take some more time.

Hope this helps!

1. I've watched a few videologs on Youtube and have heard several different people talk about shoulder pain after surgery. What is this caused from?

This is caused frm the gas they use during surgery.

2. Some people say they can't sleep in their same position in bed after the surgery. Why

You are sore for a few weeks. I am 2 weeks post op. By the end of week one I could sleep on my side & now at 2 weeks I can sleep on my stomach

3. If you are from Massachusetts please let me know. I'd like to talk with someone who is local.

Sorry I am in TN

4. Is it very painful after surgery? I'm a baby about pain.

It's not too bad. I have had 2 c-sections & gallbladder surgery & this was nothing in comparison.

5. I am hoping to get it done over April vacation. Is it reasonable to feel better in one weeks time?

I was back to work within a week & I felt fine.

Thanks for answering my questions :w00t:

Your Welcome -

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
