Having reflux again

Recommended Posts

Okay, I posted this on the reflux poll but wasn't getting any responses so I thought I'd ask it in a new thread:

I just recently started to have reflux again. I had 1 cc put in the other day for the first time. The nurse didn't want to put in the "rest" because of my reflux.

I can eat quite a bit, about 2 cups, so I'm not too tight. The doctor and nurses were perplexed that I'm having it all of a sudden. I didn't have any reflux the first 4 weeks after my surgery. I don't understand. The doc said I didn't have any hernias. Could I have an ulcer? Anyone have any ideas?

Hi

I never had reflux before the band and I started having it after a fill. I have since had 8 fills and recently went on medication for it. I have been symptom free completely since starting the medication. Maybe you should speak to your Dr about it.

Did you start getting the reflux BEFORE or AFTER your 1cc fill? Sounds like before. Maybe, paradoxically, it would help for you to get MORE restriction. Sometimes reflux is caused by a too-tight band, but sometimes people's reflux resolves when they get the band. Did you ever have reflux before the band? If yes, then maybe getting a tighter fill would help it. If no, I guess I don't have any good advice except try to manage it with medication and lifestyle.

I do not have reflux, but I've read of people who had it resolved by following a few rules; Things link not eating after 7 pm (or 3 hours or so before bedtime), drinking a big glass of Water an hour after eating, and then not having any more Fluid for the night. Basically, not much in the stomach when you go to bed. I've also heard it helps to raise the bed a little so you aren't laying flat. Hope you find some relief!

Thanks everyone. These are fantastic tips! I'll definitely try them.

Actually, since my 1cc fill the reflux got a little better, so Yvonne may be on to something. I go in for another 1cc next week so perhaps that will resolve it. I had a lot of reflux before the band, no reflux right after I got the band, and 4 weeks after surgery I started having it again. Perhaps the swelling just went away and I needed more fill to keep "down" the reflux.

Sarah, I had always wondered about the liquid bit. I'd heard not to EAT after 7pm, but I didn't know what the consensus was about liquid. This is very useful. Thanks!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
