1st fill....didn't go very smooth

Recommended Posts

So I had my first fill about 5 days ago. As soon as my PA saw my incision she immediately knew I had Fluid built up around my port. She had to numb a huge area around my port and began suctioning old bloody fluid out from around my port. She was able to get 31 cc's of fluid!! She said don't be suprised if at your next fill we get more. Because of those pseudo pockets, it then made finding the center of my port extremely difficult. I walked out of there very sore with a bruise and lots of needle pokes. I know it had to be done but it just wasn't what I expected my fill appointment to be.

Every night since my fill, I wake up in the middle of the night about 3-4am with extreme pain right about where an under wire bra sits. I have to get up and walk it out. I'm thinking its gas build up. Anyone experience this?

OMG Kristin--no I haven't experienced this. I just had my first fill, but it didn't go anything like that. I'm so sorry that's how it went and you are in such pain. Are you going back in for a follow up so they can check to see how you're healing? Did they do the fill under fluoro (I"m thinking maybe not since you mentioned that you kind of looked like a pin cushion coming out of there).

I'm so sorry you had a bad experience. Please keep us posted on how you're doing.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
