Carb Question

Recommended Posts

I dont know about actual amounts, I really dont want to live my life counting grams of this or that but if you stick with good quality unprocessed low GI carbs rather that processed white stuff you'll be right.

I think around 40g a day is good. It really depends on the person. In a low-carb diet, like Atkins, you are supposed to have less than 20g per day for 2 weeks, then slowly add them back in until you stop losing weight, then you know how many grams you should eat. I think most people are between 40-60grams a day. I don't know if this helps....

It is best to consume 50% of carbs compared to your protien intake.

So if you eat 80 grams of protien, eat 40 grams of carbs.

If you eat 120 grams of protien, eat 60 grams of carbs.

Carbs are very difficult for me to get in, what with the "eat protien first, veggies second followed by carbs if there is room."

Well, with this 4th fill, I'm not getting much in the way of carbs. The nutritionist I saw last week said 25 grams of Fiber a day. (hello Benifiber!) That is the magic number needed to promote colon health. I'm trying to work in more carbs into my diet though, since that is the prefered food for the nervous system and brain.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
