Newbie here, I get banded on 1/20/10...

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm a newbie here and my band is scheduled to be done on 1/20/10.. I just got done watching the emmi presentation on lap banding, and now I'm nervous! I've never had any surgery done before, and I'm literally scared! I'm scared of the anesthesia, but I guess I never realized that they have to insert a catheter!:tt1: I'm really kinda freaked out about that... I'm a guy, so maybe that's a guy thing???? Oh well, words of encouragement my way would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Ask your doctor if they will prescribe something for you to take the night before or morning of to help with your nerves. As hard as it is, just try to block out the specific parts that are making you the most nervous. It sounds ridiculous, but sort of play a mind game with yourself, maybe even convince yourself you won't have to have a catheter?? (this is how I survived childbirth, denial! and mindgames!!) Good luck!

I am getting banded on the same day. Where are u? My doc does all his on Weds and wondering if you have the same doc. Don't be afraid of anesthesia. I am a nurse and work in Day Surgery. You will be so closely monitored during your proceedure you have more risk of driving to the faciltiy. I am afraid of the not eating part of things. It will be a big change in behavior. Good Luck.. oh yea, you won't know anything about the catheter and not all docs place them.

And I went to Boot Camp last week. I learned that there will be no catheter because they want to encourage us to get up and walk around. We HAVE to get up to go to the bathroom this way. I like the sound of this -- no catheter!

Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
