PRE Op Diet Hard to follow

Recommended Posts

Yes!! It is very hard. The only thing that has helped me is to drink alot of crystal light or some other no/low cal drink. It seems to keep me more satisfied. You can do it-- you are almost there. I have 2 more days of it myself. My surgery is on 1/18/10. Lots of luck.

Staying hydrated really does making you less hungry. Propel really fills me up, and keeps the hunger away. But its so expensive. I've switched to Crystal Light, too. :w00t:

Hi, I have to start my pre-op diet this wednesday in prep for my op on the 30th Jan 10, I am really dredding the pre op as have been told I can only have 3 pints semi milk, 1 stock cube made in to a drink and 2 mullerlight yogurts, and as much tea and low cal drinks as I can get down. It sounds awfull. To top it all I am terrifed of having the op, don't really know what to expect when I come round from the op and how to deal with it at home. Helen x:confused:

I don't know how i'm going to deal with this feeling:mad2:. Does anyone one else feel this way. I have my surgery set for 2/2/10 .... 2 weeks from today. Man this is hard!!!!!!!:)

Tweety, the first 3-4 days on the shakes ARE hard but I promise you that it DOES get better. Starting at around Day 4, the hunger fades, they shakes/fuzzy head clear up and the whole thing becomes more manageable. Hang in there for just 2 more days and you will be through the worst of it and sailing for the finish line. Keep your eye on the prize!

First - Fanny Adams - I lived in Perth for 12 years!! Actually, in Boya.

Second - is it easier to "ease" into the liquid diet - let's say - for a couple days sub out 1 meal with a Protein shake, and then for few days, sub out 2 meals, etc? I'm a ways off doing the pre-op - haven't even had my first official doc appt yet. But I went to a seminar last night, and put in my paperwork.

I can't really answer that, Tracey, coz I only did it one way, so have no basis for comparison. I did 3 shakes a day plus steamed green veges only at dinner. The first couple of days were definitely the hardest and the green veges at night really helped. I was only on it for 10 days, as my surgeon had a last minute cancellation and moved my surgery date up and that's all the notice I got. I think I lost 5 kilos in 10 days (might have been 7 - it's been a few years now, so I'd have to go look it up).

PS: Do you mean Boyanup? Coz I don't know where Boya is!

It was suggested by my nutrutionist to try a week or more of the liquid Protein diet before I'm required to start the 14 day pre op for real.

Wise, wise nutruitionist. Mine did not suggest this, but I had a go at some of the shakes ahead of time, only to find myself writhing on the floor in agony ten minutes after the first mouthfull. Yep, I was allergic to ALL the shakes. I tried different brands, the non-soy, non-dairy, gluten-free everything and no go. On the first official day of my 3 week pre-op diet we had to overhaul the whole thing to exclude shakes.

It's entirely possible to do the pre-op diet with food only. I managed to lose 31lbs in 30 days of pre-op diet and my liver was fine. There were massive amounts of zucchini and chicken broth involved. I dare anybody to eat 1000 calories of zucchini in one day...:)

You can make a diet-friendly snack with a cup of unlflavoured greek yogurt, minced onion, dill and all the celery you can find. The greek yogurt is thicker so it is more like sour cream and less like yogurt. Dill overload helps too. Of course, you should check with your nut before diving in.

I often wonder if the doctors and nutritionists have ever had a go at following the pre-op diet. I wonder how long they'd last? My GP had a go at it once and only made it to day three before she snapped. She nearly bowed down in reverence when I managed to make it the full three weeks without going postal.

The liquid prediet is really hard. Think of it as practice for after. You will get more in tune with your body, you will KNOW you will not die if you don't eat till you are bursting and will have the satisfaction of having stuck with something very hard. I never would have thought I would have been able to do it either. My prediet was 5 carnation instant Breakfast shakes with extra Protein Powder a day plus any other no cal clear drinks. It was hard but you can do it and I swear it will help you later on.

Wow, you guys have the hardest pre-op diets!

I had to lose 12 pounds prior to surgery and was on two shakes and one lean cuisine a day, plus I could eat as much salad with green veggies (like cukes, and green onions) and salad spritz.

It was hard, but not nearly as hard as I'm finding the 3-week post-op liquid diet. That's where my doc is very strict--no mushies, just clear liquid, drinkable yogurt, Protein drinks, and cream Soups.

Hang in there--it won't be for long and then you'll be banded! Plus the longer you're on it, the more your stomach will get used to it.

Fanny - Boya is about half an hour outside of Perth - in the hills. Near Kalamunda, Darlington, Helena Valley. Small - but definitely there. :) I miss it terribly! And I just read your blog - with all your flying back and forth - my ex is a pilot for Skywest - no doubt you've probably been on one of his flights. And his hmmmm - girlfriend (that's me being polite) - is a flight attendant for them.

Im scheduled to be banded 1/27. I started my pre op diet which is basically the Atkins diet on 1/13. I can have 20-30 grams of carbs a day. By day 2 I thought I would faint.....not hard to tell im a carb lover!:) I found I was a little hungry so I started on my Water that is not my fav at all...but I knew I had to start it and try to kick the diet cokes. I found crystal light (wild strawberry)....I LOVE IT!!! I actually got up to my 64oz of water and I find that I would rather have water than anything else. Also.....if you have water with lemon...squeeze the lemon in the water and add splenda......yummy lemonaide! I have actually lost 8lbs..well that was wednesday maybe more by now. I sure hope i don't wake up and they say my liver was not small enough because I will be devastated. Thinking of everyone as they go thru their journey!

My doctor does not require a pre-op diet (thank the good Lord in Heaven).

Are the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury shakes good? What flavor is the best and did anyone try the chicken Soup one?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
