tricare standard... no referral needed was told?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was checking my status on "Mytricare.com" and this morning there was no pending authorizations in my account. So I thought, "Oh no it was denied" but I thought it should at least show it there. I called Tricare (north) and the lady told me that I didn't need an authorization. Then I explained to her that this was for lapband and there were requirements that tricare has, and she said I met the requirements and a letter would be sent, but that I didn't need an authorization. I know for all my other care like specialist I don't need authorizations that is the great thing about standard but I thought for this I would get one. Any thoughts? I haven't been able to get ahold of my doctor yet this morning. Wondering how long now till my surgery. I am scared but excited at the same time.

Tricare can be tricky.. I really worry about some of the people who work there, lol! That being said, I'd call them back and talk to someone different to make sure. If you get the same thing from two people then you should be good to go. I know with Tricare Prime you have to have all kinds of approvals and stuff. Good luck!

I am on Tricare Standard (North) also. Yes you do need an authorization. My experience is that Tricare North is a little slow compared to the other regions. Also if it doesn't show pending then the doctor hasn't submitted the authorization. If you are still have problems verify your doctor actually submitted (because mine lied and told me it was submitted and it wasn't). My overall process from submission to approval was 2 weeks.

Good Luck!

Hello Ladies...

I am tricare north too... I did get an authorization, however, the letter to the doc stated that no authorization was required so the doc took a deposit, just in case.

Tricare states that you do not need an authorization, however, you MUST meet the criteria... now I did everything for a preauthorization and they did go through those motions, showed me approved on tricareonline.com. They also requested three tests prior to getting me that approval, negative h-pylori, negative TSH, lung and heart eval.

After getting those to tricare they gave ME and authorization letter... but they gave a letter to my doc that no authorization is needed (and that is the truth)... however, going through the preauth process pretty much ensures that you will know whether or not they will pay for it...

My auth did not take long.. less than 10 business days.. and then two days after they got the test results....

Hang in there.. meet the standards and you should HOPEFULLY be fine...

Jen

I was banded on Jan 25, 2010 and have Tricare Standard (South). I had to have pre authorization for the surgery. It took a letter from my PCP and the LapBand Dr. I was told so many different things by TRICARE. I was told that the authorization would not show up on the website - wrong it did. I was told that I needed a consult prior to approval - wrong, when the LapBand Dr's office sent in the results of the consult Tricare wanted to know why they were sending it, when the Surgery was approved. Bottom line don't take anything for granted...get the Approval/Authorization Number and then you know every thing will be paid for. I got a different answer everytime I called. The important call is the one where they give you the Approval/Authorization Number.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
