Pre-op overeating?///

Recommended Posts

Am so glad to find this thread! I'm in the VERY beginning of this process, since my insurance company just approved bariatic surgery effective January 1. I've been experiencing this "last supper" thing as well, and I don't even have a surgery date! Look forward to using this forum as a support mechanism during my journey!

I went through the "Last Supper" syndrome also but when it was time to do the pre-op diet, I put my focus on what I was able to eat according to my doctor. I did slip one time (donut) and then it was right back to where I was. I am having surgery on Wednesday (1/20) and look forward to it more every day. After going through the posts and seeing what support eveyone on here gives you and it makes me realize that my life is changing for the better.

omg. i am overeating, too. i have an appt with my surgeon on the 25th and will probably be banded by the end of february. i know that that doesn't mean i'm done with food forever or anything like that but i just find myself wanting to eat more as i know i will be on liquids for a whole month (two weeks before and two weeks after) then mushies for two weeks after that and then after that never be able to eat a full plate like i used to. i can feel my clothes getting tighter and tighter but refuse to buy new ones since i'm going to be banded and losing soon anyway. i keep reminding myself not to eat so much and that i will eat again just in smaller healthier portions. on the upside, i have been weaning myself off cokes and drinking much more Water. at least i'm doing something right! lol

I love the way you listed your timelines. I just had my second meeting, wasn't to impressed with the first location I went to. But your timeline give me some idea as to how long the process takes. May I ask what insurance you had.

When I went in for my first meeting with the surgeon in early November, they weighed me (281.4). When I went in for my EKG, etc. in mid-December, they told me that my surgeon would not operate on me if I weighed more than 281.4 on my surgery date. It would've been nice if I'd known that in November... I'd already gained 6 pounds by then!

I know people often lose 10+ pounds during their pre-op diet, but I don't want to risk it, so I am trying to lose those 6 pounds between now and when I start. Yet I keep being tempted to have "last suppers."

I just (like, 30 minutes ago) found out when my surgery will be and now my need to lose this weight seems very real! I hadn't really been taking it seriously before, but now I definitely am!!

Sorry, luveroflife, I just noticed your question! I have CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield for federal employees. The Standard PPO option. I switched to it on January 1 because I'd heard such good things about their approvals.

I am SOOO ready to start my pre-op diet in about a week. HOWEVER..... I do find myself with a slight case of last supper-itis  I am not necessarily OVER eating. But I definitely take one meal of the day to indulge the fat girl who is going away. Sure, I am fully aware of the fact that this is counter-productive. But I still need to "mourn" & say good bye to something that has been with me for so long. Sadly enough, well not sadly lol but WEIRD enough, since I started my farewell party, I have lost 2.5 pounds lol And before someone gets mad at me, I am not condoning last supper behavior, I am merely sharing my experience :smile2:

I didn't really have this issue. Once the ball was set in motion (I attended my surgeon's seminar), I was 'in the system," and really---I viewed that as a proving ground for my readiness for surgery.

The approval process takes a while. For me, at least, it involved several months during which I made routine trips to the surgeon's office for weight monitoring.

I wanted to be approved, therefore, I gave it my all.

That does not mean I didn't eat. (Nor does it mean I don't eat now--because really, even with a fresh band and a limited diet, there are plenty of ways to prepare foods that taste very good.)

You are NOT GIVING UP food. You are learning to make better choices.

There's no time like the present.

How crazy that so many people have the same mind set as me! This forum is going to be very helpful. I am going through the same thing. I feel like a prisoner getting his last meal before the electric chair. My wife even made me some Cookies today. She even made mention of the last supper.

I had my pre-op meeting with Dr Michael Snyder. He only has a 24 hour liquid diet, and nothing to eat or drink after midnight the day of the surgery.

We've gone to eat at a couple of my favorite restaurants. I like Lone Star's 14 oz rib eye, with the baked potato. The crazy part is that I've been eating more, and seem to be loosing weight.

One thing I am concerned with and could use some suggestions, is that when I get to my goal weight, I'll be able to have the rib eye again. I need to get that out of my head. Any thoughts?

My surgery date is 1-22.

Last week a couple days before my surgery I had to complete an upper EDG. They found I had h-pylori infection in the stomach and esophagus. They cancelled my surgery until I'm done with my treatments. So they moved my surgery to Feb 5th. The crazy part is I'm done with feeling I need the last meal. My wife asked if I wanted to go to Zinzetis, and I don't feel the need. I am ready to start eating good foods, exercising and loosing weight. I don't have the last meal syndrome any more.

you must be real nervous, relax, stay focused, it's better if you lose weight and you'll feel better too. if you get the urge to eat, have a plan b so that you distract your attention and do other things, for example take a walk, read a book, see a movie.....goodluck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
