Can someone elaborate on this horrible gas pain I see mentioned post surgery? How long does it last? Are you literally passing gas to relieve it? What can you take to help it along?

It is pain in your left clavicle area. I have had it since the moment I woke up from surgery and still have it on and off today, which is day 5 post op. It hurts when I inhale or move the wrong way. I am taking Gas-x for it. Which does seem to help temporarily. I have been burping but not actually passing gas. Burping hurts too. I have talked to some people who haven't had it at all so it seems to vary. I called my Doc's office to ask why it was so severe for me. They told me they had to use more gas on me than usual. Otherwise it wouldn't be so bad. I just keep reminding myself that this too is temporary and survivable. Good luck to you.

Gas pain is a bear. I didn't pass much on the lower end but eventually burped like I'd never burped before, for days in a row (err, in fact am still burping more than I ever had and long and low...not nice girly burps) and oh my goodness did I feel better. Gas-x and walking saved my life. It's not the worst pain in the world, but it is miserable, and it does pass :)

I'm 2 days post-op right now and the gas pain has been bearable...maybe that means it's minimal? I've been talking long walks and using GasX strips, so I'm avoiding it as much as possible. I've been passing gas quite a bit out the back end (doesn't smell!), and burping little burps. All in all, the worst pain I've felt is in my shoulders. For me, it's been the right clavicle, as my port is on the right side of my stomach. Yesterday was a worse day for me - it was the day after surgery, anesthesia was wearing off, couldn't walk much, was in a abdominal pain (although I did venture out to the grocery store on my own)...today is a much better day. I've been to the bank and post office, and just got home from a VERY relaxing two hour deluxe spa pedicure and manicure!

Gas pains vary from individual to individual, but my pain has been minimal...I'm guessing the walking, GasX and passing of gas have all contributed to the little pain I've been in. My worst pain has been incision pain, and even most of that's gone today (day 2). :)

There are two types of gas pain you may experience. In the operating room, we use CO2 to blow up the stomach to visulize the internal organs. The other gas is bowel gas. The shoulder pain is CO2 gas that gets traps after they remove that they can. Gas X wont help that. Warm heating pads and movement will help that. Soon it will reabsorb itself and disapate....The bowel gas can be relieved with walking and gas x.....Hope this helps.....

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
