Banding and Thyroid

Recommended Posts

I have thyroid issues. When I am banded, will my hypothyroidism, prevent me from losing weight even though I am banded? Has anyone dealt with this before? I am starting pre-op soon and am concerned that it will prevent good weight loss. Would like to hear from you.:smile2:

I too have hypothyroidism. I've been taking Lexoxyl for a couple of years now. Was banded 5/11/09 and it has not effected me at all.

Good luck on your journey.............

I too have hypothyroidism. I've been taking Lexoxyl for a couple of years now too. I was banded in April '09. I think the hypothyroidism is mostly to blame for making me a slow loser but, I'm definitely losing.

You'll be fine!

I too have hypothyroidism and hashimoto's thyroiditis. I was banded in April 09 and have been pretty successful at losing weight with my band. I have found that without daily exercise, I do not lose. Therefore, I try to burn at least 800 calories per day.

I'm hypo too, but I haven't had a problem so far losing. As a matter of fact, I even had to change thyroid meds right after my surgery, because they are no longer making Armour thryoid. It did cause a change in my energy level and caused me to be slightly depressed., but did not seem to affect my weight loss.

as long as your levels are monitored and controlled, you should have no issues.

I too have throid issues. I had thyroid surgery 4/09 after my second band 3/09. He took out half my thyroid. i had alot of problems afterward, but that was because we couldn't get my levels straight. I also issue from the bad economy so my depression and stress was really bad. But I'm bak on the bandwagon and hoping to lose more.

So I agree with everyone else. If you watch your levels you will do fine.

I too have hypothyroidism (Hashimotos thyroiditis). As long as your levels are checked, and you are on the right dose of medication, it should not affect your weight loss.

I have hypothyroidism, and the only difference has been that they have had to lower my dosage of meds because of my weight loss. I started out at 250 mcg of Synthroid a day when I had my surgery at 289 pounds. Now i'm on 175 mcg a day at 229 pounds. I've lost 60 pounds in 4 months and don't feel that my hypothyroidism has slowed me down or anything!

After years of mis-diagnosing and under medicating I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer in 2008. I had both glands removed wtih 5 parathyroids as well- I was banded in 4/09 and feel great! I personally have done well but all of my doctors have assured me it would be harder because of the thyroid problems. Because I never didnt have a thyroid problem I dont personally know if it is "harder". I am currently on 425mcg of Levothyroxine a day and agree with the others that if I dont exercise every day and follow my dietary restrictions I feel worse.

I am thankful to have found an awesome Endo @ the U of Miami who was very pro-lapband for me.....

Hi,

I had thyroid cancer and my thyroid gland was removed. As long as you are taking an appropriate amount of synthroid your weight loss will be normal or very close.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
