Need help getting back on the wagon

Recommended Posts

I am 2.5 months post-op and seem to have fallen back into the same eating routines I had preop. I have had 2 fills so far with plenty of restriction. I would throw up multiple times at every meal for the first few weeks. However, I learned that ice cream would go down and STAY down without any difficulty. :blushing:( I have gotten into the horrible habit of eating one, maybe even two, pints of ice cream EVERYDAY!! I refuse to get on the scale anymore because I am so ashamed in myself. I made a vow to myself that I'm starting anew today so I am taking my Vitamins and Calcium supplements again. My plan is to drink Protein Shakes and drink plenty of Water until I get it into my head that I'M NOT HUNGRY!! Have any of you fallen off the wagon and if so, how did you get back on?! Any comments are appreciated and welcomed!!

Off the Wagon - I like that better than I have failed again. I have been off the wagon for over 4 years. Total before last year i had lost over 70 pounds which is nothing compared to what i should be losing if I followed the plan. My downfall is drinking with dinner. Yep & it is dinner only. My other meals I don't drink & most of the time forget to drink. Long & short - you are not too far off. Last year for what ever reason I made a new me. I thought hard & explored why I had had surgery & decided that I was NOT going to fail again at something that is easy. Easy in the sense of food restriction still have the food thoughts but the portions are so much smaller. Ice Cream ? I got on that kick too until i found myself still starving b/c there was nothing in there other than soft, sweet & creamy fuild. This past year (2009) I lost over 45 pounds. No I should still be losing more than that but I look at it is 45 + pounds lighter than I was 7 years ago. Explore why you fell off & why you spent (you or insurance) the money for surgery, that helped me a lot for a new start.

Hope it helps & glad to know that I am not the only that has struggled with the wagon.

Well, the honest truth I've discovered is that nobody comes knocking on my front door to give me junk food. I have to go buy the darned stuff, LOL. So a few things I've learned over the years. First, you can eat really, really well and healthily if you only shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Don't go up and down the aisles. Produce, meat, dairy and grain (whole grain breads, etc.) are all on the outer edges of the store (and the ice cream isn't next door to the milk, either, LOL). When you much pick up things like olive oil or healthy Cereal, frozen veggies etc., eat before you go to the store and have a list and buy ONLY what is on your list.

Keep a food journal....be brutally honest. If you snagged 3 M&Ms out of a co-worker's candy dish when nobody was looking, write them down. If you cheat with this journal, you are only cheating yourself because nobody else is gonna read it. You might also keep track of when you are the hungriest. For me, it's around 7:00 pm (when I get home) and still have to prepare dinner for my family. So I have something good that I can eat while I cook. It might be some raw veggies or frozen veggies I can microwave -- part of my dinner but eaten as an appetizer. If/when you see a pattern, make little adjustments to help you through those times.

And, above all, don't beat yourself up! We've made careers out of belittling ourselves totally out of relation to whatever "crime" we committed. And that "guilting yourself up" can make you do more of what you are upset with yourself for in the first place!

Im like above. I been banded since 03. When I went in for my recent fill. Like you 2010 is my year too! Its like what happened? I was honest. I like to eat and cook. Im very healthy and fit other than being obese. For now. So now I tell myself and it is different this time. Im ready. Other things in my life are worked out. It is my time. Why would I cheat myself out of all this work Ive done. Brother I have worked at it with exercise, band, and you know the ropes. We gotta think before we act and get it on in 2010. I have marathons planned, goals set, measurements taken. Its all down to the do. Thats where we come in at. My body, my hands loading up the jaw.....rite? You keep in touch and we will get on this thing together if you like...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
