redness and bloody discharge on site

Recommended Posts

Hi I was banded 11/25/09 and also had a ventral hernia surgery at same time, everything has been great but now one of the larger incisions, maybe my port if they put it on the right side is red and oozing, could be from the tummy band i have to wear because of the hernia surgery. i am using warm compresses, and neosporin any ideas? I tried to call my doctor but the machine says call 911, not quite what i had in mind. Thanks for reading this any help would be appreciated.

Hi Susi, I was banded on the 24th, a day before you. Some Thanksgiving dinner we had, huh? I drank mine!:smile2:

Anyway, I would suggest you call your doctor ASAP (Monday?) and tell them what is happening with this incision site. Did this just start? Wasn't the site where it is discharging pretty well healed over? I have seen my doctor twice already, and I am sure if there was anything wrong it would have been noticed if you have seen your doctor as well.

I'm not sure about the tummy band, or even know about what type of hernia surgery that you had, because I had hiatal hernia repair done with my surgery which required no tummy band. I would think just keep the area clean, (including the band), careful with the warm compresses for to prolonged periods of time, and liberal use of neosporine is probably overkill as the discharge is from the inside coming out, but after cleaning the area a bit put on couldn't hurt.

I think what you are experiencing can wait for the doctor until Monday if it is only a small amount of discharge, UNLESS, you start running a fever, cannot hold down Water or liquids, or you start having pain and red blood discharge.

Let us know how you are doing.

Cheryl

It's probably an infection. Do you have a fever?

hi,

No fever, just red with little bloody discharge, it was fine untill the last scab came off, it seems much better with the compresses and neosporin. Will call doctor on monday, have an appointment on tuesday morning. what side is the port usually on. The ventral hernia was right above my belly button it was really large.

Hey,, you are doing all the correct things.... try to cover it with some guaze or something somewhat sterile IE: large band aid etc etc and keep using the neosporin,,this will keep the area clean. You want to keep the entire area clean and dry and you take a shower and let the Water run on that area, very delicately dab it dry and they cover with the guaze and neosporin.. Keep an eye on your temp.. and just give the Doc a call in the morning.. This is def not a 911 call if you guys have never heard of this before there is a service called nurseline 1-800-846-4678. They will triage anyone free of charge and tell you what direction you should go in, IE: urgent care, ER, blah blah blah awesome service. Good luck I hope you feel better very soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
