I was wondering if I can still have lap band surgery if I suffer from acid reflux. I have been on Nexium for about a year, and I have my acid reflux under control. I was wondering if I would still be a candidate for the lap band surgery?

Have they check you to see if you have a hiatal hernia? If so it can be repaired during your lapband surgery.

I agree. My acid reflux was cured during lapband surgery because they did find a hiatal hernia and did the repair. took care of the reflux problem whoo hoo!

I believe that this is one of those things that just depends on the individual.

I've heard of many cases of people "curing" their acid reflux by having the band.

In my case, I actually developed heartburn after getting banded... to the point where I'd wake up dry-heaving in the middle of the night. Fortunately I've been able to get it under control... my doctor put me on rx Zantac.... I take it 2x/day. It took about 2 weeks to build up in my system, and I haven't had any problems since.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I have not been checked for a hiatal hernia, but I guess I will find out when I do the upper GI. I would hope that my acid reflux does not get any worse after the surgery. I take Nexium everyday and I have my acid reflux under control.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
