Having Second Thoughts

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for lap band surgery on Jan.22nd. My insurance approved it and I have had everything done but pre op bloodwork which will be done this week or next. I am excited thinking of the lifestyle change and I know how much better I will feel to be thinner and healthier but I am scared of the surgery itself. My father had back surgery many years ago and never came out because the Drs goofed up and he bled to death on the table. Anyone who has surgery through True Results in Scottsdale how was it? Dr. Nirmul will be doing the surgery. Any info anyone can offer me would be so helpful. Are there any support groups in the Mesa area that I could attend before surgery?

Don't let once incident that happened "many years ago" stop you. You didn't come this far to turn back.

There is more chance of you dying while driving to the hospital that there is in surgery.

That being said, I think you have a year after insurance approves to go through with the operation. Maybe you do need to take a little time to think about it.

Ask your surgeon if this is true.

I know your pain I am scared to death to go under the knife. I have had nightmares about it more than once but I have to push them away. You have come this far, don't let fear stop you now. I lost a close friend to a "simple cosmetic procedure" so I can kind of understand. My want and need to get healthy is going to trump the fear I know I am going to go through right before the surgery. After it is all said and done you will be glad you powered through your fears to do what is best for your health and happiness.

I wish you all the best!

Jitters are pretty common, pre band or any other surgery! But take consolation in the fact that this is outpatient surgery (at least most doctors do it outpatient) and unless you are having a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time, it takes about 30 minutes or so. No surgery is risk free, anesthesia can have complications but the statistics for surgical complications with this procedure are very small.

Keep your eyes on your goal, not on the speed bump that the surgery is. Surgery is just the very first and somewhat small step on the road to the new healthier happier you.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
