Still losing--Do I need a fill?

Recommended Posts

My sister and I got our bands 8/29/05. She has lost 35 pounds and I have lost 28 pounds in eight weeks. We will be going to our doctor next week. We have not had a fill yet. We both think that we are still losing and we don't need a fill. Our philosophy is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." What do you veteran bandsters think? Should we get a fill? Thanks

SHowboat girl you, your sister, and I were banded on the same day! I have lost 31lbs so far and my doctor said exactly what you are thinking. He said if it ain't broke don't fix it. If I keep losing more than 3lbs a week average then he does not recommend a fill. I have noticed that my hunger has increased a little but I still only eat about a third of what I ate Pre-band. I think I am just gonna wait until I hit a plateau or my appetite increases to the point where I don't feel restricted. I say wait on the fill. I go back to my surgeon on November 6 for another checkup then he will se if I am ready for a fill. I hope to still be losing. I want to have lost 40lbs before I go back. ONly 9lbs to go. YOu guys are doing great with your weight loss. Keep up the good work.

I cant imagine why you'd want a fill if you're still losing. The more you can eat and still lose, the better nourished you will be. Or should be depending on your food choices :-P

Once your weight loss slows down, then think about it.

I'm not banded yet though!

I wouldn't get a fill if you are losing and not hungry all the time. Not everyone needs a fill right away.

Me, I got banded 8/31 and I'm going in for my 2nd fill here on Wed. My band is wide open and I'm hungry all the time. I've only lost about 14 lbs since banding, half of what you have. And yes, I'm doing my best to follow the bandster rules, but without restriction it's just like any other diet.

Sounds like you guys have good restriction already, I'd go with that. smile.gif

Thank you for your input. I think I will wait until the weight loss slows down. It is good to have people to talk to because my sister and I are the only people in our small town who have had lap band surgery. Thanks

If I'm losing my Dr. will not even consider giving me a fill..

you are right, if it aint broke dont fix it! Fills are for when you have stopped losing and are eating more then a third of what you used to while following the bandster rules!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
