Made the appointment!!! :)

Recommended Posts

I am so excited! I made my appointment for my initial consult with the doc, psych, nutritionist, etc. Of course, they are completely booked, so I have to wait until January 20th. I'm sure it will get here sooner than expected but still... (sigh)

I've been getting my ducks in a row, so to speak. I switched insurance carriers during our open enrollment because my company covers WLS. My boss is supportive of my surgery decision and told me that he'll work with me for the time off.

Now - it's getting in there, getting approved, etc.

They told me that there is a 376 question psyche eval. What is that about? Anyone know?

Oh - and I'm going with Dr. Trace Curry in Cincinnati. My PCP also recommended him.

Looking forward to being a 2010 bandster!

I had a similar psych eval (in Dayton). There were a TON of seemingly random questions- though I'm sure they have their purpose. Some of them were math problems, some were 'one of these things is not like the other' questions- I think it shows the psychologist your ability to comprehend and reason- that's my guess anyway. It wasn't too horrible. Mine was probably 200 questions and maybe took me a half-hour. Just take your time- you'll be fine!

I had two tests that I had to take for my psych clearance. One was 567 questions (MMPI-2) and the other was 120+ questions. (Millon) They were basically personality tests. I "failed" the MMPI-2, basically it came back saying it was inconclusive. The Millon came back fine. I was cleared for surgery without any problems despite the first one being inconclusive. My psychologist said I'm just really good at putting on a "happy face", a.k.a. lying to myself. She said it was actually relatively normal. Good luck on your journey! Time will fly now that you've started!

Congrats! I know you are super excited. I just made my first appointment as well. I go next wednesday. Good luck with everything. The psych evaluation makes me a little nervous also.

Hi, the psych evaluation is what scared me the last two times I talked to the doctor about surgery. However, third time is a charm and I'm not going to be scared. I hope it all goes well. Besides what does taking a multiple choice test really tell people about your personality and psyche?

My understanding is that the purpose of the psych eval is to see if you understand what you are getting into and that you know that you'll have to be making lifestyle changes. They want to see that you are going to be willing to commit to eating healthier and exercising and that you realize that this isn't a magic fix. They'll also want to see what kind of support system you have at home.

Hi Spaz, My appointment is on the 6th as well. Good Luck for you! The third time is usually the charm :tongue2: This is my first appointment, and first time going through all of this. I have seen several nutritionist and even had personal trainers- not to mention all of the diets on my own. At my last physical my PCP suggested talking to bariatric surgeon so I went to the seminar and then filled out a questionaire. I just got a call yesterday from the surgeon's office saying they thought I was a good candidate. I am nervous about the whole process but I'm sure that it will be well worth it in the end. You're right it is silly to be scared of a multiple choice test. Is the psych evaluation usually just a mutiple choice test? Or do they shoot a ton of questions out in person as well. I sometimes have a hard time of putting my feelings into words. LOL. I should be okay on paper.:)

Im in the same situation as you! Im hoping to be banded in 2010! I havent made my appt yet with the surgeon- its on the list of things to do tomorrow. But I have seen my PCP and started my 6 month doctor supervised weight loss program (which I've done horribly on since Thanksgiving) since that is what my insurance requires. Im probably looking at a May?June band date. Im impatient and want it done now! But Im just grateful that my new insurance does cover WLS!

Same here - my insurance is supposed to cover the surgery. I hope they don't make me wait too long. I am SO ready for this. I've been studying it for a while, reading this board (which is AMAZING) and just want to get to the next step.

Here is to hoping we get banded, soon!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
