Havent been approved yet through insurance...worried

Recommended Posts

Hello All!

This is my first post and hope everyone is good! I have just started the process to start attempting the Lap-band Surgery. I have been to my primary doctor who did some blood work and went over my health records. I have had high blood pressure for years and ashma plus last set of blood work my blood sugar was a little high. However I am nervous because my BMI is 38 not 40 has anyone ran into this? What has their luck been with insurance paying since mine has to be authorized first? I would greatly apprecitate any input...and thanks!

You may want to check the support group for low BMI bandsters.

I think it depends on your insurance company. They are all different. I have a BMI of 38, but I have co-morbities.....high blood pressure, back pain, Water rentention, fatty liver. My doc says that I should have no problem. I'm in my 3rd month of my 6 month waiting period. The hardest part is that I was told not to lose too much weight and I can't gain any. Not an easy thing to do. My insurance co. is Horizon POS (Blue Cross/Blue Shield NJ). But, like I said - every insurance co. is different. Good Luck to you!!

They look at more than BMI they also look at your weight and co-morbidities. My BMI was 36.7 but I was 100 pounds over weight on both ends of the chart. I also have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, arthritis, back pain, and infertility. What is your height and weight? When I started I did not make the weight requirements I was off about 5 - 10 pounds. I decided to pack on some more pounds and wear heavy clothes when i went to get weighed in.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
