I had my surgery on the 18th and I've only lost 4 pounds. Most, if not all of the people I know that have had this done lost at least 14 pounds their first week. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Ashley,

I was banded on the 15th and have lost 7 pounds since surgery. However when I can home from the hospital I was up 4 pounds so I'm actualy down 11. I asked my doc and he said I was right on track and it would take a little time. He kept me on a liquid diet until day 10 post op. He explained once I was on 'real food' the weight would come off faster.

I was banded a couple years ago, so I don't really recall how much I lost the first week. I think 14 lbs seems high. I think that would be the exception, not the rule. Try to follow doctors orders for diet and try not to focus on the scale. I understand why you want to, but the weight loss will come.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong if you have lost 4 lbs in a week.

What am I doing wrong?

Comparing yourself to others.

4 pounds in 1 week is great!

If it would make you feel better, I can dig up a half dozen recent posts where people said they gained weight the first week.

Everybody is different and you can't base your weight loss on the experience of others.

Don't compare what others are loosing to your lose.

I'm down 15 lbs since surgery and it's been a little over 6 weeks.

It's the end result not how fast you get there.

I agree w/ everyone else when I say don't compare your weight loss to anyone else's. Everyone's body is different. Everyone starts at different weights. The more you weigh, typically the faster it comes off in the beginning. Also, try to remember- typically the doctors say they aren't looking or expecting weight loss in the first few weeks, they want your body to heal correctly.

Also- a note to whomever mentioned being heavier when they came home from surgery. I was a couple of pounds heavier too- I figure it was swelling on the inside that we can't see.

you will start losing after fills. That is when restriction and weight loss begins. Dont worry too much.

I don't know anyone personally that lost 14 lbs first week. I lost about 10 lbs the first 3 weeks and then not a lot until I started getting fills. The recommended weight loss is 1-2 lbs on average per week. Depending on if you exercise or not or how well you keep your Protein count up will make a difference. If you drop your calorie count too low and your Protein is not up to as close to 70 grams a day, your weight loss will not be great because your body thinks it's starving.

You also can't go by anyone else. This journey is different for every single person. Every fill amount is different, every sweet spot is different in what it takes to get there.

My daughter has been banded before me. So I knew going in what I was in for but we've had different results...all good. Just remember, that four pounds is four pounds you didn't have the week before!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
