Pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

Does any one have suggestions on how to minimize the gassy feeling from the Protein Shakes? I have tried pepto & gas relief and it doesn't seem to help.

Gas-x? Beano?

Let me pose a question. Are your shakes based on milk -- do you mix a powder with milk or as an RTD is there milk as an ingredient? If so, were you a milk drinker BEFORE now?

The answer may be lactose intolerance. If you are using a powder, try mixing with Lactaid milk, soy milk such as Silk or take Lactaid tablets and see if that makes a difference. Gas is a common sign of lactose intolerance. And, the older we get the less tolerant of lactose we become.

You know you may be right. I am drinking the RTD Myoplex Lite and I do believe it has milk. I don't normally drink milk so maybe I am lactose intolerant. I have been trying gas-x and beano, pepto but so far no good results. I can't really avoid the Protein shakes unless I powder and mix with Water. Something to think about for the future. I already bought a bunch of the RTD for my 2 week pre-op diet so after that maybe I will do the powder.

Thanks for the tip.

Well, you don't even have to mix with Water. Try Silk Soy Milk (the vanilla flavor is quite good and I imagine that it would add a nice flavor mix to a chocolate shake. Another option is Lactaid brand milk. It has been treated to break down the lactose.

I thought the soy milk would be gross -- you know how you get something in your head, right? Well, I was in the grocery store and they were giving free samples all over the store that day. Most of that stuff doesn't appeal to me but when I saw the lady handing out little cups of Silk I thought "what the heck" and I tried it. I was surprised at how good it was. Soy milk has a lot of Protein, just like cow's milk, so it would be a good substitute.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
