When do you start seeing extra skin?

Recommended Posts

I realize this is different for everyone.

I was banded on 8/24/09 (4 months) and needed to lose about 200 lbs total. To date I have lost almost 80 lbs. (WooHoo for me!!) Realizing I still have a whole lot of extra weight on my body I have not noticed anything that could be called loose skin yet. (I'm not unhappy about this.)

But I'm wondering at what point I can likely expect to see this becoming an issue? I'm doing a lot of exercise which I hope helps a little. And while I am 48 y.o. I actually think my skin is pretty good to begin with. But eventually I have to think I will see this becoming something I need to deal with.

So I was hoping those with experience might have a feel for at what point I might expect to see this start to happen.

Thanks

I'm older too, exercise a lot and have pretty good skin. I dont have a lot extra.

I didnt "start" to see it at any stage, it was more like I got to goal and realised some bits simply werent going to get better. My "fat" bum is really probably extra skin.

Extra skin is almost always containing extra fat too, apart from maybe the arms. I thought I was going to have weird side boob flaps, but those actually did go away as I got thinner.

My midriff all of a sudden went into Shar-Pei look alike mode. Freaked me out but I am a lot older than you. It happened at about 60 pounds out of the 75 I wanted to lose. I exercise, too.

It depends where your fat is located. My 200 pounds is all located in my midsection and the only extra skin I plan on seeing is my do-lap (it do-lap over my belt.)

Others have it through out their bodies. It is most noticeable when it is under the arms (bingo wings) or in the boobs.

Who said you can't learn anything watching reality TV? I got this on The Biggest Loser.

I just very recently began to see it in other places besides my mid section which began to show first. I have it now in my what I call wings just under my arms and behind them a little where my bra comes around to the back and a little in my neck. I have also begun to get more wrinkled in my face. I am 51 and expected some of it although I will say that as I am losing weight some of the extra skin is going away and I think it is due to the exercise. I just got a personal trainer to help me begin to sculpt and see if I can rid myself of some more of it. Small price to pay for getting thinner and healthier.

Does the excess skin ever need to be removed and if so does the insurance usually cover this?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
