lap-band in college

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm currently a sophomore in college and planning on getting banded on March 10th, 2010 (during spring break). I was just wondering what the experience of being banded was like during college. What were your experiences with meal plans or continuously eating with friends? Also, my intended date of surgery is on a Wednesday and I start class again on Monday, what were your experiences post-op?

thanks :smile2:

do u live in a dorm or can u cook for ur self? In College if u have a apartment style housing it can be really easy to cook for your self. If u have a meal plan then eating in the cafe can be a challenge. Look for yogurts and softer foods like Soups etc your first little while post op or pack Protein shakes etc that you can eat between classes.

Since your surgery is on Wed and u dont go back til Mon you should be fine. If ur keeping it a secret just tell people you slipped on the ice ( if there is snow then) or hurt your self working out if anyone asks why ur taking it easy. The first couple of days can be sore but make sure u move around a lot.

You will definetly have to let me know what it is like to be in college and have the band. I myself am also a sophmore in college and I just started my six month diet. I am aiming for this summer for my surgery because I won't be in school at that time. But I am also worried about socializing after the surgery and having different eating habbits than everyone. I hope everything goes well for you! Keep me posted about your experience so I know what to expect.

I'm living in a dorm this year, with an all-inclusive meal plan. A microwave/fridge are the extent of how I can cook for myself. I figure by the time I will get back to school I will have less than 2 months. Then, luckily, next year I will be living in an off-campus house that has everything i need to cook.

I am in college also.I have my band scheduled a week before next semester. I don't plan on telling anyone but I can imagine it is a hard secret to keep when your dropping the weight so fast. I take my lunch to school so I will probably just take a Protein Shake for awhile after surgery. I also plan on getting a rolling backpack so I don't have to carryu my books. I will let you know how things work out for me so you can be prepared.

I'm not too worried about people knowing, although I'm not planning on shouting to the rooftops about the surgery. I mentioned the possibility of having the surgery to my roommate and my best friend at school, because I figured they would notice a huge change considering we generally eat every single meal together. I thought it would be easier to tell the people I will be around the most, but haven't mentioned it to my brother (who is away at school) or any other family member beside my parents. I'm sure I will figure things out as I go. I would love to hear how things go for you. Have you officially set your date and gotten approval?

I had my surgery as a Junior on a Wednesday, and my butt was in those seats on Monday morning! It was hard to stay awake because the pain meds made me sleepy, and I definetly walked slower to my classes. The desk tops in lecture kinda rubbed my belly, and it was also difficult to bend over and pick anything off the floor or out of my bag from a sitting position.

All of my professors were very cool about the whole experience.

So even having my surgery in the middle of a 15 credit hour semster, I still made all As in my classes and am holding a 3.6GPA at Kansas State University!

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
