What were/are you drinking in the first couple days after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I just had surgery yesterday. I've been drinking mostly apple juice, veggie broth once (we ran out), and V8 fusion mixed with one scoop of Protein Powder. Right now I'm drinking a cup of apple juice I heated up and added Miralax to.

What are you drinking, or what did you drink, in the immediate days following your surgery?

Thanks!

I drank (and still do) Isopure. My surgery was out patient on 11.25 at noon so by 5pm I was sipping my first Protein. It's good 40g protein and only 160 cal. I also drank (drink....still do) Vitamin Water. I lived on these 2 things the first 5 days.

How much are you drinking? I don't want to drink too much for fear of having it come back up. I tried mixing some unflavored whey Protein with veggie broth and it just didn't cut it. It was gross.

How many ounces do you think you are getting in? I'm day after surgery and I've probably had 20 ounces or so of liquids today. Do you think this is enough?

Just got banded 12/10 and would LOVE veggie broth. Where do you get it? What's it called? I can't find it anywhere!

Thanks

My dr said drink drink drink. typically 64 oz a day. 20 oz a day is not going to cut it right after surgery. Watch for signs of dehydration (concentrated urine, dry lips, sunken in eyes).

The things I drank right after surgery- warm tea w/ a lil honey, Water, chicken broth, SF popsicles, SF Jello, coffee...yeah that's really it while i was on the clear liq phase. Good luck!

I got my veggie broth base, along with chicken and beef, in the Soup aisle of my local king soopers (krogers) grocery store. It is on a top shelf, in little jars. It's called "Better than Bouillion." It's a paste that you take less than a teaspoon and mix it with Water, then microwave it until it is as warm as you'd like it to be. It has minimal Protein in it, few calories. But it sure does taste good.

So are you just sip sip sipping away all day? I guess I'm scared about drinking too much too quick and having it come back up.

I'm not allowed anything except Water, broth, caffeine free herbal tea, and diet Jello until Monday (I was banded on Thursday).

I thought I would die from lack of calories and talked to my surgeon's assistant about it, but she reassured me that my hunger is really only head hunger right now... that you aren't really hungry this soon after surgery. Interesting... I believe her though cause its definitely a different kind of hungry than I was feeling right before surgery. Like, my stomach is not growling and it doesn't have that feeling like it is eating itself. I just feel like I should have some sort of calories since I haven't eaten anything since noon on Wednesday. And, I'm definitely bored of my limited choices. But, I think this is good for me... a few days w/absolutely no foodertainment. LOL

BTW, I did not have a pre-op diet at all except to eat a light b-fast the day before surgery and only Soup for lunch, then liquids after that. Sooooo, I didn't go through the 'no food' process before. I can see why psychologically this is a good thing to realize that, yes, you can go a few days without food. I have a few calories stored up I guess. ;->

Oh, and on the sipping thing, I've found that I can take the same size sips as I used to, but I'm just careful not to glug down a bunch of sips at once. I take one or two normal sips and then put my cup down. I haven't had any issues of nausea or anything coming back up. But, when I took my medications (5 pills each smaller than a pea) in the hospital yesterday, it did cause me a big burp afterwards (just air, though - it didn't make them come back up). I figure that means I probably gulped them down too fast, though. I felt hurried cause the nurse was waiting for me to take them.

I am the same as many of the others, broths, tea, Water anything clear the first 10 days. I am now on to puree, and that is going pretty well. I am not hungry and I still haven't had a fill..or first adjustment yet.

I am drinking the Isopure which I love and I am also drinking Water and may have some broth from time to time. I noticed someone asked where to get the veggie broth and I bought mine at at a store called Trader Joe's. My stomach seems to be growling from time to time but I can deal with it but what is' bothering me is the trapped gas in my chest grrrrrr.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
