Women-period problems post surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi ladies, I was banded 3 and a half weeks ago. I have a Mirena IUD and had had very light, very minor periods until my surgery. I'm having a really heavy period now and was wondering if that's in any way related to the surgery, anesthesia, drugs....? Did anyone else go through this?

thanks

sara

<raises hand>

I, too, am 3.5 weeks out and have Mirena. And have had my period since about 5 days post-op. It's still lingering around. And driving me batty.

My guess is it's related to your hormones going wacky with weight loss and surgery.

Did they give you a blood thinner for your surgery? When they gave me one at the hospital, they said it could make my next period start earlier and be heavier than normal. I'm 3 months out from surgery and my periods are normal now. The first month was really heavy though.

Thanks, y'all. Yes, I did get the blood thinner injection in the hospital. No mention of a heavier period, though. But MAN. I'm having really bad cramps now and that is definitely not the norm, having this IUD. I think my body is freaking out.

Hi Sara--- after my surgery I started 5 days early and it was heavy bleeding- and then the next month I was like 9 days late-- from what I read on it- when you go under it can effect your cycle... plus estrogen is stored in our fat cells and as you start losing weight you will notice a few differences in your periods due to the loss of estrogen-- at that is what I was told....

Hope this helps!

Hi All,

My anesthesiologist told me last Tuesday (surgery day) that my period would be wacky for the next 30 - 60 days and to not be alarmed. She said its the 'happy/sleepy' drugs creating havoc on the hormones.

Yeah I've had some issues too. My first period after my surgery was a week after the surgery, didn't come early. It heavier than normal but not too bad. My second one after surgery came a day early, it was heavy and I was in tons of pain from cramps, which I am lucky to NEVER get. Hoping things don't stay like this!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
