Sent home from surgery with a catheter

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I had my surgery Tuesday afternoon. I was having lots of trouble urinating at the hospital after my surgery despite the fact that I was taking in lots of liquid. They used an ultra sound like machine to check the Fluid in my bladder to find out that I had 800 cc's just hanging out!! I had to have something called a straith cath done to relieve the urine. 6 hours later I had to have it done again this time 1100 cc's! Thats like an entire nalgene bottle full of Water in my bladder. I still could not urinate on my own. They sent me home with a permanet catheter. I go back in tomorrow to get the catheter removed, I'm just praying I can pee on my own.

Did this happen to anyone else? How long did it take before your bladder started behaving in its own??

one of the discharge orders was for me to be able to urinate. It was soo hard to do i sat and sat for a couple of minutes until i was able to go. I had the hubby run the Water in the sink for stimulation and it worked. Anesthesia works a little differently for some folks makes all your organs sleepy too. Just realx it will be ok give it a day or two.

I could urinate immediately, however, some people take longer than others. The organs are sleepy and need time to awake. You'll be alright soon. Just relax after the catheter is removed, drink warm fluids, and it will happen.

I had surgery on Tuesday at 10.30 and had pee problems too. I had already opted to stay overnight so here is what happened.

About 12noon still in recovery I had to pee they put a bedpan under me and of course I couldn't go I need privacy people!

Got to the room and about 3 - I had the sensation again - need to pee sat on the toilet for an hour - no dice but man I needed to pee. Nurse called the doc to say I needed a cath - oh hell no I thought. I didn't quite understand it but I didn't want it.

Got back on the toliet, turned off the lights to help relax, had my mom turn on the Water at the sink and it took about 10 minutes but finally a trickle! Over the next 3 or 4 hours it got better, much better.

My husband was sent home with a cathedar...he had it in a full week. When they took it out they filled him up with Water first then if he could pee it out on his own (and he did) they would send him home if not they would have putten it back in sent him home for another week then tried again. It's a side effect of the anestesia. Thank GOD he got it out, I hear that some posple have to wear cathedars forever (not after lap band but because of other medical conditions). Bummer!

Yes, this happened to me. It is the result of both the anesthesia and pain meds. When they took the cath out of me, I could not urinate on my own. So, they had to straight cath me whenever I felt full. I had to stay an extra day but the next day was able to go on my own. They didn't even consider sending me home without being able to go on my own.

So sorry to hear. This happen to me after my 1st baby.....believe it or not the nun said drink a beer..she said it works for just about everyone. I did and about 1 hour later I went.

Now with the lapband do not know it they will let you drink beer, but it is worth asking if you can not go.

good luck.

I was admitted to the hospital the night of my surgery and the nurse woke me up at around midnight and told me I had to get up and try to urinate or they would put a cath back in me. Boy did I get up fast.. ok not so fast...

It might be just swelling from the original cath being in from surgery and once the swelling goes down you'll be fine. [hugs]

Thanks for all your words of encouragement. I went in to get the catheter removed, it was an amazing feeling. Unfortunately, I came home and still wasn't able to urinate on my own. I had to go back in again to get another one placed. I had that one for about 12 hours and then insisted the next morning I'm getting it out regardless. This time I felt different. I felt like I had more control. I had it taken out this morning and HOORAY I peed on my own. Hindsight, I think a huge factor for me was being on the pain medication. As soon as I was off that for 24 hours and moved to Tylenol, it happened. Thanks again for all your tips and encouragement!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
