Hey there, I'm new to the forum and have my first appointment with my doctor in 2 days. Just wondering if anyone on the forums are in the St. Louis area? I'm going through the St. Alexius New Start program and my surgeon is Dr. Richardson. If anyone has had him for their surgery, please let me know your thoughts and experiences. All the info on this forum is wonderful. It's really helping me as I start this journey to the best version of me I can be:) Thanks!

ok guys this might be here somewhere but if it is ignore this and show me to that thread. so i wanted to start a thread on programs. now i know everyone of us is is different and has had a different but all the time i keep seeing people ask well is this ok is that ok well i dont know what does your particular program teach. so here is my deal come here tell me where you are from your surgeons name your nutritionists' names and the hospital also this is a place for the good, bad, ugly, indifferent. so i will start with me im in baltimore, maryland. my hospital is greater baltimore medical center. my program is called the comprehensive obesity management program. there are 3 surgeons Elizabeth a Dovec she is the head of the program. her and her or staff are all female including anesthesia it is great. there is Dr. Bello. i dont actually know much about this one ive not met him but other people in my program absoulutly adore him say he is highly skilled. and then there is my surgeon timothee freisen. all of these surgeons have taken extra training to make the surgery to make it as cosmetic as possible. my program has its own closed facebook group. where we have access to all of the surgeons just tag them in a post and they will answer. also the registered dietitian watches the group and answers all our questions seemingly at all hours of the day i swear its like she does not sleep lol. so anyone in maryland considering this surgery i highly reccomend gbmc- 2 replies

The Best and the Worst: Your Weight Loss Surgery MEDICAL SERVICE Experience
Alex Brecher posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You’re committing to a tough journey when you decide to get weight loss surgery. Your surgeon and the other health professionals who work with you have a big influence. They can make the journey go smoothly, or they can throw all sorts of obstacles in your path. They can make you feel comfortable and tell you everything you need to know, or they can make you feel like an idiot and withhold information. I’ve even heard stories as bad as bariatric nurses telling patients that it’ll never work! One of my best findings was finding how great my surgeon was. She always was there for me and I am still in touch with her. I am fortunate not to have had any negative experiences around the time I got my lap-band. I guess I could have used a little more nutritional help, but that wasn’t really anyone’s fault. So, what is the best thing you have experienced on the medical or insurance side of weight loss surgery? What is the worst thing? Share your stories here!- 18 replies

Hello All, I would like reviews of Dr. Clayton Frenzel in Arlington-Dallas, Texas. I'm having band issues and need a revision doctor but want to make sure I pick the best one. I'm self pay which is a horrible thing since I'm not sure I can even do anything about the band if it is damaged. I've searched and can't find much about Dr. Frenzel. I have had a consult with him and he and his staff is very nice. He spent a lot of time answering all my questions but I can't find many that have used him...which makes me nervous. He does his surgery out of Forest Park Medical Center which I understand is an excellent facility. You may pm me here if you don't want to post in public. Thank you for your time.

I have a great life, with one exception. My body has changed dramatically in the last few years (since my thyroid was irradiated) and I hardly recognize myself. I want to hike, dance, workout and live again with ease. I want to recognize myself when I look in the mirror. I want to be free from the pain I now have in my joints and muscles. I want to regain my strength. I want to feel good about how I look and strut my stuff again. I want to move in the world with the grace I have always known. I look forward to "leveling the playing field", to giving myself the VSG tool and to reclaiming my place in the world. In March 2012, I had interviewed one surgeon (Dr. Lauter) and though I was not thrilled with his demeanor (his boundaries seemd a little weak), I was preparing to use him as he and his program was quite convenient for me and for the requirements of my insurance company. In April, he decided to take a sabbatical which doesn't work for my schedule. Then, I researched other options and found a highly regarded surgeon (Dr. Chablis) who was a little further away but would do the surgery in a conveniently located hospital. While I thought he was arrogant, I was willing to overlook it as he reputedly has exceptional surgical skills. However, his office does not provide the pre-op medical supervision my insurance company requries and the provider to which he referred me for pre-op medical supervision is not approved by my insurance company. As I want to get the surgery this year, I will be traveling in November and December and my insurance requires a 6 months pre-op program, the clock was ticking. I met with yet another surgeon in May (Dr. Nguyen) and I am pleased to say that he fits all my requirements. He will be available when I want the surgery, his office oversees the pre-op program my insurance comapny requires, he and his team are covered by my insurance and have worked with them extensively, he and the hospital with which he is affiliated are conveniently located, he's Harvard trained in bariatrics, he will except the March meeting with Dr. Lauter as my pre-op program start date and best of all, I like his demeanor. My surgery is scheduled for 9/27/12. I started I have upped my exercise and decreased my calories. Since the beginning of May, I have lost 25 pounds and dropped one size. I am learning to eat my Protein first, drink more Water and watch my carbs. I am looking forward to continuing the journey and excited about reclaiming my life.

I need a new surgeon, my old Dr moved to a new location and I'm unable to travel to his new office, and I really want to go to someone outside of the 1-800-get-thin circut after hearing about their legal issues...I was wondering if anyone knew of any surgeons who are taking new paicents in the Lancaster, Palmdale, or Bakersfield areas. I need to see someone really soon. Last time I saw my old doctor he filled me to 9ccs, but Everytime I eat something gets stuck.... and I'm always hungry 3 hours after I eat anything.

Hi Everyone. I'm scheduled to have my wls performed on Valentine's Day! I'm super excited. No second guessing here at all. I start my liquid diet next week. Not looking forward to it but I'm trying to stay positive and keep my eye on the prize. I'm hoping to connect with others having surgery at the same place or that live in the vicinity.

Hello! Being slightly computer clumsy, I clicked on the stars button to rate my surgeon (He was a 5 out of 5). Unfortunately, the vote registered a 3 out of 5 instead. How can I change this? I was unable to find a moderator button under the surgeon's page and have been unable to re-enter the vote. Any information to update this would be great! Thanks!

What Are Your Top Considerations for Choosing a Weight Loss Surgeon?
Alex Brecher posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
There are probably a few things everyone looks for when looking for a bariatric surgeon. Beyond insurance coverage and/or cost and location, you probably wonder about success rates, and use your gut to decide whether you like the surgeon and the look and feel of the clinic or hospital. What are the factors you are looking at if you are looking for a surgeon? If you’ve already had WLS or chosen a surgeon, what did you look for? Was there a “deciding factor” that helped you decide “This is the one for me?” I’m also wondering whether your decision was entirely based on something objective, or whether there was a factor involved that you can’t really explain – your gut just told you to choose your surgeon. And finally…did it work out for you, if you’ve already had surgery? -
Hey all, I'm new to the forums, only been around a couple of weeks and been registered here for even less time, but I'm doing all of my research like any person would -- which has now got me at a pause because I've got a question that I can't figure out what the "right" answer is. First, I know it varies person to person, but based on how everyone else has done with surgeries (if there are any post-op people floating around these pre-op boards!), what would be the better choice? To choose between: - Doctor A and Doctor B are both relatively close, so driving for follow-ups would not be strenuous. - Doctor A's cash/self-pay price is $1,800 more than Doctor B's price -Doctor A does offer a $500 discount for completing an information program first; their price also covers the hospital, surgery, surgeons, anesthesia, (basically all inclusive) -- and a full year of follow-up care - Doctor A's price does not cover any additional lab work or the EGD - Doctor A requires a psych eval. pre-op using their office's or my own psych (Already got the "go ahead!" letter from mine yesterday!) - Doctor B's price covers the doctors, hospital, anesthesia, surgery, (also basically all-inclusive) -- and only covers follow-up care through the first 90 days post-op - Doctor B's office said they will do a post-op appointment 1 week out and then 3 months out -- and if that 3mo out appointment is in the 90 days it's covered - Doctor B does not require any psych eval for self-pay - Doctor B's price also does not cover any additional lab work things - Both Doctor A and Doctor B have a $200 consult fee that is included in their quote ----- So as y'all can see, they are very similar. But part of me is really balking at the fact that Doctor B only covers 90 days post-op. Am I just being overly cautious, though? Is a whole year of aftercare really necessary? Maybe for a worst-case scenario, in which case, why not have it just in case, right? Are those 275 days worth the extra $1.8/$1.3k? I've worked hard on not seeing the glass as half-empty, but if something DID go wrong, since I don't have insurance, it would be in my best interest to pay a "little" more just to be safe, wouldn't it? I know it seems like I've already made up my mind, but I honestly haven't. This will be a lot of money out-of-pocket to begin with and it really is my preference to make the best INFORMED decision that I can. Thanks for any feedback!

Hi everyone! I have a question that hopefully you all can help me with. I have a BMI of 31 and understand that I would be a self-pay patient for WLS. However, I live in Minnesota and am having trouble finding a good surgeon that will agree to do the LapBand surgery on me. I only have one co-morbidity that being high blood pressure. Could I get some recommendations on where I can find a doctor that would be willing to help me but who is also experienced and skilled? I am willing to travel wherever, just not Mexico . . I appreciate any advice! Thank you

Which surgeons do you recommend in Tijuana, Mexico?
shesticklish posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum and stumbled across it while doing my research into the gastric sleeve surgery. I'm 24 (25 in 2 months) and have been overweight since I was a child. At about 20, I was diagnosed with PCOS and have been gradually gaining weight since. I've dieted multiple times. Each time I'd lose however, I'd gain it all back and more. Plus weightloss with PCOS is sooooooo hard. I'd always get demotivated after a couple of months. I was working so hard and I was seeing little-no results. Very frustrating! So that's why I'm here. I'm Jamaican, living in Jamaica. We currently do not have the facilities/the facilities here are fairly new. As a result, I've decided to have surgery in Tijuana. I'm hoping to get this done in May-June 2017. Can you guys provide the names of doctors that you recommend? So far, I've reached out to A Lighter Me. Which A Lighter Me doctor do you guys think is best? -
Hi I have narrowed my search down to Slimband, SWLC - DR. CHRISTOPHER S. COBOURN in Oakville and Credit Valley Clinic (maybe - This one is only on the list because the surgeons are out of Credit Valley Hospital which has a great reputation) I would like to hear from other people who have used any of these clinics and please give me your honest opinion of their services and also how are you doing now? Are you happy with the surgery result etc.? Any complications with the bands? After care? Anything you can tell me would be helpful. Thanks

What Surgeon Do You Recommend In The Plano/frisco Tx Area
Tim716 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Have you had the surgery? Are you glad you had it? Anyone regret having it? What surgeon do you recommend in the Plano/Frisco TX area? I am in the very early stages of considering this surgery. I am a firefighter and as everyone knows the number one reason for firefighter death is cardiac arrest. I do not want to be part of that statistic. Any help, advice, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -
Did Your Doctor and/or Surgeon Give You Confidence?
Alex Brecher posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Doctors can be intimidating. It can be hard to open up to them when the issue is something that’s embarrassing and super important, which is definitely the case with obesity and weight loss surgery. Some primary care physicians frown on weight loss surgery, and can make you feel guilty about considering it or scared to take that next step. Others can support you and give you the confidence you need to go ahead. Bariatric surgeons can also influence you. They may talk down to you or fail to give you the time and explanations you need. This can make you feel that WLS may not be for you. Or, they can informative, helpful, and supportive. They can make you feel that WLS is something you can do. I know people who have spoken to the first – the negative – type of doctors and surgeons and nearly given up on their ideas about WLS. Then they’ve gone to a more positive environment and decided to go through with it. Did you have any negative-seeming doctors at first when considering WLS? What did you do? Did you just ignore them and move forward? Did you find another doctor or surgeon? Share your experiences and tips for not letting a doctor scare you off!- 10 replies

How Many Times Did You See Your Surgeon Before Surgery?
Alex Brecher posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Everyone’s WLS experience is different. You might visit your surgeon for a pre-op consultation, then come back the next time for your surgery. Some surgeons have a pre-op program that requires you to attend a few meetings or have some appointments before you schedule surgery. You might even meet your surgeon for the first time on the day of surgery if you’re going to Mexico or another far-off destination for your procedure. So, I’m just curious…how many times did you see your surgeon before surgery? Did you feel comfortable with him or her by the time you arrived for your surgery? -
I'm looking into providers for my sleeve surgery when I get back home in June. It's likely I will go to Europe to get it done because it's about half the price of the same thing in the UK. Can anyone here tell me where they got their surgery done and who did it. I was going to go with Christian De Bruyne (through a clinic in Belgium) as he does a session in Birmingham (near where I live) every month, but looking a bit more at his record he doesn't seem to do the sleeve that often (more band and mini-bypass) and I contacted his people to as some questions over a week ago and don't have an email back yet, so I'm thinking twice about it. Some of the wording on the site makes me doubt their aftercare a little, which is why I emailed with questions. Any information you could give me would be appreciated, there is a Centre of Excellence in the Czech Republic that looks pretty good but I'm just scouting things out now. Thoughts? Opinions?

Where To Find Solid Statistics On Surgeons?
AmberBryce posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I'm deciding between several surgeons in Mexico to be banded. I've read every forum topic regarding surgery in Mexico, and read all the posts on people experiences with the different doctors. What I'm wondering is if there is a place I can go to find hard, solid, medical FACTS on these doctors and the hospitals/clinics they practice in? Such as properly filed complaints, lawsuits, etc. etc. I want to find cold hard stats on the doctors, not opinions. It's nice to read different peoples experiences that they've had with these doctors, but that only tells me so much. Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction! Amber -

If anyone living in or near Bloomington, IN is considering the lap-band I whole-heartedly recommend Dr. Ray. He and the staff at the Center for Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery are the kindest and most competent staff I have ever dealt with. I was recently banded and other than some gas pains, I had no pain. Dr. Ray is such a warm doctor and his staff are as well. Totally Recommend.
