  1. Hi everyone I’m currently just gone 7 months post op and just got my bloodwork back from the vitamin and minerals panel my surgeon had me do and it turns out i’m very low on Vitamin A. I realise i’m super uneducated on what vitamin A is/comes from and how to remedy it. I take a daily bariatric vitamin - one that was prescribed by my surgeon and it seems to be doing the trick on all other necessary levels of vitamins but A. I’ve tried to research a little but so far i’m not understanding how to manage this or where it comes from. All i’ve seen is that it’s common in bariatric patients ? I’m seeing my surgeon mid november so it’s a little far out from now and i kind of want to know a little about it before my appointment. If anyone has any insight it’ll be greatly appreciated !
  2. Hi Everyone I am in desperate need of tips on how to take my vitamins. I have tried 4 different brands that my surgery office prescribes (i live in Europe so may not have the same brands as other areas). They are all bariatric patient specific vitamins. I have also tried different formats of the vitamins: powder/ gel capsule/ hard pill … neutral or flavoured. And i just can’t take them. Every time i swallow a pill it feels stuck inside my throat and makes me cough and splutter and i feel it stuck for ages. When i break open the capsules and pour the powder over something i gag so badly because of the taste that it makes me feel sick for hours. The powder that you mix in a a drink is so disgusting that i heave when i try to force it down I do take them with food during a meal but it puts me completely off my food once i struggle to get them down. I don’t know what to do anymore - does anyone have any ideas or tips on what i can do or on any vitamin brands available in Europe that have the correct composition for vsg patients ? I need a high iron supplement due to genetic form of anemia. 🙏🙏🙏
  3. Which is better? liquid or chewable Vitamins? I am having surgery tomorrow morning and want to order so I have them for when I get home.
  4. Hi -- Curious to find out if not taking a multi-Vitamin can impact weight loss? I haven't been the best at consistently taking mine. I was given the go ahead to take them starting week 3, and I'm just finishing up week 5. I'm not a fan of the flavor and leaves me feeling a bit icky after I take it. Curious to see what you guys thought, if there is any correlation between lack of Vitamins & weight loss . I have an appointment with my DR on Thurs, so going to see what other options there are for vitamins. The Bariatric Advantage berry flavor chewables are not the greatest if you ask me! Don't want to short myself nutrients, nor weight loss so eager to see what my other options are. Eager to hear what you guys have to say.
  5. This morning when taking my Vitamins I started sliming and felt as though I was going to throw up. Fortunately I didn't, but it kinda freaked me out. I am 3 weeks out and have not been nauseous once, even right after surgery, with the exception of this morning. I took my antacid and my Multivitamin with sips of crystal light, as I do every morning. Anyone have this happen to them, or have any advice? Sorry if this is a repeated post, nothing came up when I searched.
  6. Bariatric advantage, bariatric choice, unjury, celebrate, liquid vitamins from Costco ?, I amdo confused. I have surgery before christmas this year. Also having some worries and fear.
  7. I was told vitamin patches haven’t been tested well enough to be approved by my program (kaiser). Can anyone tell me about their experience, and lab results after taking them? Vitamins are making me nauseous and I know how important it is to get them in, but at 5 weeks post op, my body really doesn’t want them! Thanks!
  8. Hi everyone! I’m having trouble keeping down my calcium citrate chewable, every time I take one I am immediately hit with nausea. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting that down? My nurse had mentioned powders, pills, etc. What works for other people? Also, I am running out of my multi vitamin chewable. I was taking the lemon flavor which was okay. Does anyone have any flavor or flavors they particularly enjoy from the brand Bariatric advantage? Thank you!!

    Supplements in my world

supplements 3 weeks post surgery Happy reading Melena
  10. I'm 7.5 months post-op and have been taking Vitamins in the form of 3 tiny capsules each day. I gagged on the chewables and the thought of the liquid stuff makes we want to gag. While I seem to be doing ok with the 3 tiny capsules, they smell and taste terrible. Since I've be able to take other larger pills without a problem, I was thinking of going back to taking full-sized centrums again. Anyone else go back to full-sized vitamins?
  11. I am 18 months post op from RNY surgery. The first year I took my B12 shots once per month, but then I switched over to sublingual B12 once per day. During my visit with the nutritionist last week, she asked me what type of sublingual B12 I was taking. Apparently there are two types. The correct type is called methylcobalamin and it turns out that was the type I had been taking. So is this commonly understood? What type are you taking?
  12. Good morning! I was sleeved exactly one month ago today. For my entire first month I used PatchMD's Multivitamin and Calcium/D3 Patches. I also take a sublingual B12. I had my one month check in with my Dietitian on Friday. When she asked about Vitamins I told her I've been using the patches and she pretty much went off on me about how there is no long term data. Well, yes, obviously because they are new to the market there would not be any long term data, and I took them knowing they are not FDA regulated yet because FDA approval takes a very long time. I'm a food scientist, so I understand both her concerns and how the patches work. But after thinking about it I decided to try the chewables. Over the weekend I tried them 4 times (morning and night) and each time they either made me nauseous or I dry-heaved. I guess you could argue that if I had a reaction to them they are actually working... but I obviously don't want to feel sick twice a day every day for the next 2-4 months. So, I'm wanting to go on the Patches again until I'm able to swallow Vitamin pills in a few months. The problem is, my Vitamin panels are not drawn until the 3 month mark, so I have no way of knowing if these are really working. Has anyone been using vitamin patches for more than a couple months? How have your labs looked?
  13. Hi all! If you use multivitamin patches, do you wear them at night or during the day? I just received mine and nowhere does it state which is better day/night. I have to wear for 8-9 hours. Doesn't make a difference to me just wondering if there is a difference for absorption, etc. TIA
  14. I’m 4 days post op on clear liquids. Wondering when I should start supplements. Surely my body really needs it now more than ever.
  15. Hello everyone... I am almost out of my Vitamins and was wondering what type and where you purchase yours? I have gotten mine from various places...I would love to be able to get them all in one spot... Thank you, Staisea

    Vitamins

Hello, my name is Julie O'Connor and I am an MSc student at the University of Derby. I am conducting a study which looks at adherence to Vitamin supplementation in post-operative Roux-en-Y Bariatric surgery patients and would really appreciate your help. I specifically need responses from people who have undergone Roux-en-Y surgery at least 12 months ago and who are at least 18 years old. If you decide to participate in the study you will be asked to complete an online survey about your use of vitamin supplements, together with some general questions which ask about your feelings of confidence in how your own thoughts and views may influence your wellbeing . Please click the following link for further information and to take the online survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/F8T86YC If you have any queries, please email the researcher, Julie O'Connor on J.OConnor2@unimail.derby.ac.uk Thank you for reading this posting and I do hope that you are able to find the time to help me with this research.
  18. Hi everyone! I’m still in pre-op and my dietician recommenced starting my multivitamin to get used to taking it. I’ve browsed through the recommended vitamin list she provided, and was wondering if anyone has tried Celebrate Vitamins. It looks like they have the better flavors, but unsure if they taste good. TIA!
  19. Well I'm just under 3 weeks from my VSG surgery with Dr. Almanza in TJ. I'm trying to gather as much information as possible to ensure a speedy recovery and ulitimate success. This site is AWESOME I must say, but there is so much information to sift through. I saw a great thread on proteins and got a lot of good information from that. I've seen some good stuff on pre and post op diets. I think I'm most confused on the vitamin situation. I know that vitamin supplements are going to be a lifelong and essential part of life going forward. But what vitamin(s) do I absolutely need and is there a multi that will cover them all? I've heard I'll need to supplement vitamins A, D, B12, Iron, XYZ and the kitchen sink. I really hope there is one multi-vitamin that will cover my needs and would a chewable be better absorbed over one I have to swallow? Any help on any of the subjects mentioned would be greatly appreciated. One final concern I have and help I could use are from the ones who have done this by themselves. Now my mom is actually going to Mexico with me for the surgery and will be with me for 5 days afterward while visiting relatives in SoCal. Then she heads home to Utah and I fly back to Texas where I'll be all by myself. I'm just wondering what I should expect. I currently wieght 500 lbs and figure I'll still be in the upper 400's when I get back. I guess I could just use some encouragement or advise from others who have already walked the path I'm about to. Thanks for taking the time to ready this.
  20. My bariatric nutritionist and doctor’s office recommended the Bariatric Fusion brand of chewable multivitamins to take 4x daily basically for the rest of my life. When reading the package, there’s a Proposition 65 warning: “Warning: consuming this product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which are known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm.” I didn’t find much after searching online aside from a lawsuit and settlement agreement about lead in their products from 2018, and related health and safety code violation. (https://www.oag.ca.gov/prop65/60-Day-Notice-2017-02545) Does anyone have any insight on this? I’m thinking if I need to take these for the rest of my life, I should be switching to a safer brand! Thanks
  21. So I’ve had mini gastric bypass 2 years ago and I’m finally pregnant. I switched from taking bariatric Multivitamins to prenatal Vitamins. I need to know if that’s ok and covers all my nutrients and minerals needs? In addition to prenatal vitamins I’m also taking 1200 mg of calcium citrate, 20mg Chelated Zinc, 5mg Folic Acid and once in a week 10,000 IU Vitamin D, I would also need to know when should I have my first prenatal visit to the Obgyn? Mine is scheduled at week 6, what do I expect of it other than ultrasound and what what type of Vitamin testing should be preformed? Anything else that I need to know.. I am a bit worried and excited
  22. I did a search and didn't find much, so... Does anyone get their doc to write scripts for their Vitamins or supplements to be able to use your Flexible Spending Accounts through insurance? Being early post op, mine are pricey (Celebrate, Bariatric Advantage). My FSA indicates I can use it if my doc writes scripts. Just curious if anyone has any experience with this. Also, when were you able to switch to using regular old OTC vitamins? Do you take more than the recommended dosage? Thanks in advance, fellow losers! ~ HiHoSleever

  24. I have tried bariatric advantage capsules and the celebrate chewable a (a little more tolerable) however both of them make so nauseous. Is this some thing that will pass or should I keep trying different kinds? So many people on here I see buy the chewable ones over the counter. I would try it if it wasn't for the fear my NUT instilled in my head about vitamin defficiencies down the road and that we HAVE to take bariatric specific vitamins or we are not getting what we need....... Please anyone share your experience.
  25. I'm almost to the end of my journey here--I have one scheduled weight check on Friday and then one more before they schedule surgery--and was wondering what you guys who have had surgery do for Vitamins? I've read so much my head is spinning. I'd love to see some daily guidelines/brand recommendations from you guys who are old hats at this stuff!
